"Mama! We're home!" Milagro shouted, slamming the door behind her, leaving Jaime to open it again for himself. "Thanks." "No problem." His mother shortly appeared in the doorway, opening her arms for the boy. His sister and he had picked up another job for the house. It was something he just couldn't afford to lose- couldn't afford to watch them lose. So as frustrating it was to come home with a degree and end up in the same spot- he had to learn there was nothing he could do about it. And like his father said, they would all make it through it. "I'm sorry, amor." She hushed him, "Nono- It's fine. It's for the house." He smiled, before seeing his grandmother carry a tray of lemonade from the kitchen. "Abuela? You didn't have to."
The woman just smiled at him, "Of course I did." As he went to grab the glass she swatted his hand away. "Just not for you, chico." He gasped lightly, "Me lastimaste!" He grabs his chest, "Who's it for?" She smiled yet again, "Chica outside. She help us with that pest problem." "Mama- no-" Jaime turned to the back window.
There was a girl, just standing up from the grass. Likely pulling from the small hole in the wall that his abuela had been complaining about. For a pest control worker, she looked rather- smooth. She wore a white shirt, partnered with some retro short shorts. Her hat had the city's logo, something sold at any tourist stand downtown. But under it was the brightest hair he had ever seen. It was an array of blues to pinks, something reminiscent of the stars above. Her eyes were much clearer in a light blue.
The women in the room seemed to notice this, both sharing the same expression. "Jaime- amor, please-" "You better stay away from that poor girl because she's doing this shit for food. And we can't pay her real money." Rudy stepped in for the two, crossing his arms. "What?" "She just showed up and told us the little diablos were in the walls." "She's like a little rabbit with those ears," Elena told them, before settling down at the dining room table again. "Rabbit?" Jaime asked, he began imagining her with two sprouting bunny ears, a fluffy cottontail, a skin-tight- "Knock it off! Chico pervertido!" Rudy shouted he went to slap the back of his neck- but instead took another step back. "Forgot about that little ass bug."
Jaime had the scarab on his back for almost a week. The heir of the Kord industry gave him some burger box, one he happened to open. And never saw her again. Only days later did it really dawn on him that he was alone in this. That some bug was in his back, some new voice was in his head, and no one was there to get it out. No hospitals, no cops, no nothing. And even Jenny. How could she just let her aunt do all these things to people? Take homes, storm communities, how could she just stand by and let that happen? He knew the answer to that now.
'Blood seems to be pumping to your mid-region' "I know!" The room seemed to look at him like he was crazy. "Is it that.. Voice again?" His mother asked, "Yeah- sorry." "It's the Diablo I'm telling you. Come, I'll bless you again." "Abuela-" "Come!" She moved past the tray of lemonade, leaving Jaime to pick it up. "I'll tell you what- I'll go give this to.. Her and you can get some incense or something!" She scowled, "You are a sneaky little boy-" Jaime already began to slide through the back door, tray in hand. He noticed there were 2 glasses, assuming before it was for him and his sister. He glanced back through the window, to see his smiling grandma, thumbs up and all. She had planned this from the beginning. His cheeks began to heat up yet again.
The minute his foot hit the grass, the girl turned. He gazed at her legs, there was a lot to see. She was much smaller than him, and anyone else in the family besides that. He wondered if she was malnourished, "Scan complete." "What? No- don't scan her!" He turned around, mumbling into his shirt. "Are you scanning me?" The girl asked, he immediately spun back around. "You heard that?" He coughed his last words away, "I mean- No. I'm not- nobodies scanning you. If you were asking that.." She hummed, "You just said-" "No I didn't!" Her eyes darted down to the drinks in his hand. "Are you going to poison me?" She leaned closer, eyes squinting. "No! No." "How do I know you're not lying again?" Jaime shook his head, "Jaime, would you like to see her scan's results?" Khaj-Da piped up again. "No. You shouldn't have scanned them!"
