"Boooooored!" I complained.

"Well find something to do, Jack." My aunt sighed.

"But there is nothing to do!" I was 15 and it was summer break but I was bored as always. "Ryan is working and Terrance won't pick up his phone. I think he is on vacation." Everyone had something to do but me.

"Ryan? Working?" She sounded surprised. "Why don't you go help him."

I wanted to say no as that was boring but then I realised it was probably more fun then lying halfway off the couch. I flopped off and found my shoes and hoodie and then left to the fast food place where Ryan worked.

"Hey Ryan!" I walked up right behind the counter without a care.

"Oh hey Jack." He didn't take his eyes off the register. He was only 2 years older than me but he was super serious.

"Need any help?"

"Ya, go take this to that yellow car outside."

"Anything fun I could do?" I complained but took the meal out anyways. The woman with three kids took the meal and hurried to drive off and after giving me 10 dollars. I chucked the money at Ryan and watched him scramble to get it.

"Dude." He said in his chill tone.

"Come on I've been bored all summer."

"Go get Terrance then, I'm working."

"He hasn't been home!!" He didn't answer so I left, still bored.

I sat on the rocking horse outside the restaurant and rocked it back and forth, contemplating on something to do.

I must have been sitting there for a while for Ryan came out on lunch break.

"You're still here?" He came up behind me.

"Ya." I looked at him.

"Come sit with me." We went to sit at an outside table while he ate and gave me fries.

"Work is so boring." He told me.

"I thought you liked working." I stuffed my face full.

"Well, I didn't want to, I was forced to. Ugh, my dad just wants me to take over the business when he retires."

I nodded. "I think work is boring."

"Trust me, it is."

He finished eating and didn't have to go back to work yet so I coaxed him to come with me.

"Where are we even going Jack?" He sounded bored as always.

"It'll be fun! You won't feel like a dumb adult who just does work all day anymore."

I lead him to my secret cave near my house, since I lived on a beach. We went in and Ryan had to duck under the entrance. Inside the cave was a large ledge over a waterfall and the cave was lit with glow sticks and LED lights. I'd taken all my friends here before and all had enjoyed it, even Ryan.

But now he had on a bored face.

"Jack this is so old. I liked going here when I was younger, OK? But seriously, I have to get back." He started to leave but I caught his arm.

"Wait! Why are you so bored all the time? You don't even have fun like a kid anymore!"

He paused and thought of his answer for me. He sat down so I sat too, knowing it would be some long story.

"I used to have so much fun in this cave Jack. Now it just feels humid and dirty. I feel like there's just no point to it... You know what I mean?"

"Well why don't we just brighten it up?" I said, hoping for a smile from him.

He sighed and started to get up. "You'll understand when you get a job." And then he was gone again.

I sat in the same spot feeling still bored but also upset that Ryan couldn't have fun anymore.
