Jace's pov
Waking up in the woods next to Azariah leaves me feeling disoriented and nauseous. When Kratos contacted me and said they were telling her today I was more than surprised. You would think he'd give me a better heads up. Like hey, next month on the first Tuesday at nine a.m. is when this will happen.
Not hey, this is happening in five minutes, go find my daughter.
It didn't take long for me to find where she was sitting with her back against the tree, eyes closed, looking like she was taking a nap. So, I sat down next to her, and did the same thing.
"Are you awake?" I reach over and run my hand along her thigh, looking for any sign of life.
"Mhmm." She leans forward and puts her head in her hands, like someone with a headache would. "Did that really just happen?"
"I'm afraid so." Getting up, I stretch out my legs, and roll my neck around a few times to get rid of the kinks. Next I check my phone to see how long we were gone. "It felt like we were there for a couple hours. According to the time, it was only five minutes."
Azariah gets up as well, pulling out her own phone. "I need to call Micah." She tells me. I watch her face carefully as she dials him, then waits till he picks up. I expected her to be pissed, yelling and cursing them. Or at least sad, needing my shoulder to cry on. Instead, she just looks solemn. Like she doesn't have the strength to be either of those things.
"Hey Micah," She says into the phone. "I'm fine, but something occurred to me when I was out for a walk. Amber discovered that the MD4 doesn't work on an already shifted wolf. It doesn't make them go crazy, it just kills them. And...." She pauses while he talks, "We have pack members up there. So there's the whole mink link thing. Rescuing them seems more feasible now, at least I think so."
Holy crap, I didn't even think about the fact that we could communicate with them. Maybe they had already shifted remembering this fact that we clearly forgot.
"Ya, we're heading home for a bit. If Amber needs anything, tell her to call me." She then hangs up, shoving her phone in her back pocket.
"I forgot all about the mind link" I say to her. She steps closer to me, so I take the cue and pull her into my arms.
"Me too. It was Atreus who reminded me. He wants to help us, but he's limited apparently." She mumbles.
When Kratos first told me about who her parents really were, I thought maybe, somehow, he was pulling my leg. But now the reality of what he said is sinking in. My mate was a Demigod, who had powers that she had no clue how to control. It scares me that she could go off half cocked, and try to end this entire thing herself. I don't particularly want to live down here without her.
"I don't want anybody knowing. Not my parents, not Micah and Amber. Nobody." She firmly states. "I don't want to be treated differently. That includes you."
I slide my hands down her back, and grab her upper thighs so I can hoist her up into the air. "Yes, your highness." I tease her. "Let's go home, get something to eat, and see if the pups will let us take a nap."
"I'm not sure that I'm tired, but food and family time sounds great." She wraps her arms around my neck, then leans in and gives my lips a small peck. "Alright mortal peasant, carry me home."
Our house wasn't far from where we are, so I take my time to make the trip last longer. As much as I think she wants to go home, I'm certain she needs some time to decompress after the bomb she was on the receiving end of.
"Do you know what it was she wanted to tell me in private?" She asks me.
"Kratos told me while you two were talking. How do you feel about that?" Part of me doesn't expect her to answer, because she hasn't had enough time to process it. Hell, I've known for a couple days and I still can't process it.
