— Chapter Four —
❝ Oh dear ❞
The sky was overcast, as it often was in the small town. A slight drizzle of rain came down onto the large field as the Cullens waited for Edward and Bella to arrive.Aurora could hear Emmett's jeep, driven by Edward, traversing the slick roads as she stood by Esme, adjusting her ponytail.
Across the field, Rosalie and Carlisle were in a playful spat about which team would bat first. Rosalie won.
Esme stood at Aurora's side with a gentle smile, "You seemed to like Bella, Edward seems to agree with me. Perhaps you two could even be friends?"
Aurora hummed with a soft smile directed towards the younger motherly figure, "We will have to see what happens."
Farther into the woods, a choked noise came from what only could be Edward. At least, it sounded like Edward. It sounded rather funny, drawing everyone's attention for a moment.
Emmett was laughing at the two by the time Edward arrived in the clearing, a nervous-looking Bella on his back. The girl did not seem to enjoy the speedy run through the forest.
Esme began her quick walk to the two, followed by Aurora, as Edward let the girl down, "Was that you that we heard, Edward?"
From across the field, Emmett hollered with a wide grin, "It sounded like a bear choking."
"Yes, you would know, would you not?" Aurora chuckled as she grinned at Emmett. He stuck his tongue out at the girl.
"It was him," Bella clarified, smiling hesitantly at the two women in front of her. Esme shot a bright smile at the girl, showing off her pearly white teeth.
"Bella was being unintentionally funny," Edward explained with an amused expression, the human's cheeks turned red at his explanation.
"Of course." Aurora chuckled, glancing between the two, before she and Esme both took an arm on the girl, leading her away from Edward.
From across the field, Alice's giddy voice rang out, "It's time."
A deep roll of thunder followed immediately after, leaving the human's eyes to widen in curiosity. The three women stopped a few feet behind where Emmett stood spinning an aluminum bat, Jasper crouched down behind him.
Aurora had made the decision to stay out of the game at Alice's suggestion. The pixie-like girl was rather set on her vision.
"Alright," Esme said rather loudly in a clear voice, "Batter up."
Alice waited for a beat, standing straight and motionless. Suddenly, like the strike of a cobra, the ball flies into Jasper's hand.
"Was that a strike?" Bella asked, confused.
"It is only a strike if they do not hit the ball," Aurora explained to the girl, briefly glancing down at her.
Jasper hurled the ball back to Alice, the girl giving a brief grin to her lover before throwing the ball again.
The second time, Emmett hit the ball causing it to fly past the trees and into the forest.
"Home run," Bella mumbled, confidence in her voice as she attempted to see Emmet as he barreled across the bases in a blur.
"Wait," Esme softly cautioned the girl as they listened closely to Edward running after the ball.
"Out!" Esme cried out before Emmett could reach home base as Edward suddenly broke through the trees holding the ball, a wide grin on his face.
"Emmett hits the hardest," Esme turned to the girl who stared at Edward in mesmerization, "but Edward runs the fastest."
Carlisle stepped up to bat as Alice readied herself for the throw. As Carlisle hit the ball both Edward and Emmett jumped after it mocking into one another mid-air, leaving Carlisle with a home run.
As the boys fell to the ground, they pushed each other, laughing.
"What are you doing?" Edward laughed as he sat on the ground.
"Come on." Emmett's laughs echoed in the large clearing as he helped Edward up.
Jasper came next, stepping up to bat as he expertly flipped the bat. Alice playfully winked at him as she threw the ball. He quickly hit it.
Emmett took the chance to climb a tree to catch the ball, throwing it back as he caught it.
Rosalie grinned as she watched him, "My monkey man.."
Aurora let out a laugh at the two before looking at Bella, "You will have to get used to their sentiments if you are to stick around."
The beautiful blonde followed after Carlisle, holding the bat and herself with confidence only to falter when Alice threw the ball before freezing.
The small girl was frantic as she suddenly yelled, "Stop!"
The group became alert as they heard three speed towards the human girl, alert as they faintly heard three pairs of footsteps running towards them.
"Oh dear," Aurora muttered to herself, both tiredly and annoyed, as she watched Alice's frantic movements and Edward's regretful gaze.
