"Brook..." Adam's voice pulled her back into the present.
Looking at him from the backseat, she frowned, "Yes?"
"Your clothes are wet, put this on..." He said as he handed a set of clothes back to her.
She frowned and took the clothes without a word. Looking down at her soaked clothes, she saw she was indeed wet and trembling. How come she hadn't noticed?
"Don't worry, I won't look..." Was all he muttered as he turned down a street.
Wouldn't look? Breathing out a puff of air, she ripped the tanktop and shorts off from her body. Left in only her Red and Blue striped bra with matching panties, she pulled the T-Shirt that was too big over her head and breezy cotton shorts that went down to her knees up over her hips.
"These are yours." She said with a raised brow.
"Yep, you don't like?" He nearly chuckled. "You can always go around in your underwear."
"You looked!" She gasped.
"Nope, I kept my promise." He laughed now. "Aren't I a good boy?"
"Whatever."
Crossing her arms over her chest, she gazed out the window, the tension in her body draining.
Both her parents were gone from this world and her brother...she didn't even know if he was still alive or not. The moon peeked out from the clouds and a few stars were visible. If only she could jump out of this van and dance beneath the stars. A place she wanted to be was home. Country or City? If she were to choose, she would pick the country without hesitation. She wanted to run out into a field and dance in circles under the night sky, just like she did as a child. Sadly, her parents had moved into a small town when she was thirteen. She grew up in tennessee and loved going up to her grandparents during the weekends.
"What are you thinking about?" Adam asked suddenly.
"Nothing...much." Her voice cracked.
She would not cry, could not cry. Times were different and even though all she knew and everyone she loved was gone, she had to be strong and live. Blinking the unshed tears away, she breathed, "Talk to me."
"About what?" He asked, his tone harsh.
She wanted to crawl inside of herself and escape reality, but she would fight that urge.
"Anything, how about start with what happened to you after the breakout. Why are you here?" She asked.
"I am here to survive, isn't that what you are doing?" His voice held no concern, no emotion whatsoever.
"Yes, I am surviving, but you..." She paused. "You have different intentions. I can tell. What are you planning to do?"
Adam pulled the van over onto the side of the road. They sat in the van with awkward silence for what seemed an enternity.
"It is confidential. Let's just say I am helping 'someone' to find a vaccine." He announced.
"Are you taking me to this 'someone'?" She asked curiously.
She tried not to show too much of her excitement. Was there a possible way for the humans to live once again without any fear? With this 'someone' tell her everything once she arrived? A faint smile played upon her lips, but then it vanished as quickly as it appeared. Even if there was a way to keep humans from changing, that didn't mean they couldn't die. Once an undead attacked its prey, they never stopped.
"Yes." He said swiftly.
Adam turned around in his seat and peered back at her. His icy blue eyes making her heart nearly explode in her chest. He just stared at her for a moment before speaking, "Don't make judgements based on your own stupidity. It will get you killed."
She gasped and was appalled by this man. He had seriously just lectured her! Adam eyed her for a moment more before turning back around in his seat and gripping the stirring wheel. He put the van back into drive. An hour had passed and still there were no more words passed between the two. Did he really have to be so rude? She was fine on her own. Truthfully, she could probably easily kill him, yet she had no desire to harm him. Maybe a smack upside the head would be enough.
"We're here." He announced.
She let her muscles loosen and her arms drop from her chest. He pulled out a small device and pressed a button. She watched in shock as the side of a plain building, one made of faded red bricks, opened a path that led underground. He drove into the dark opening. Once inside, he pressed the button again and the wide door closed behind them. She couldn't see a thing until he turned on the headlights. They were going deeper and deeper into the tunnel. How much time had passed? How far down were they? What was this place? Adam stopped the van when they came up to a dead end, which was another door. Enter through that door as well, they went deeper into the earth. A third door, metal by the look, met them after another few minutes. Adam rolled down the window and stuck out his head to the glowing pad by the wide metal door. A strange noise came from the pad then the creaking sound of the door lifting.
"This is our headquater." He informed her as they drove into a large parking garage.
It looked just like a normal parking garage, except only a few cars filled it. A few strange looking machines were off to the side as well. Adam parked and fluidly got out of the drivers seat. Before she could pull open her own door, he beat her to it and opened it for her.
"Come." He seemed to demand.
She still didn't like his tone. It pissed her off, but instead of arguing with the man, she did as he said and got out of the van. He took wide steps as if he were in a hurry. She had to nearly jog to keep up with him. If only she had longer legs.
"Can you slow down?" She panted.
Adam came to an abrupted stop, causing Brook she bump into his broad back. He stiffened in front of her. Was something in front of him? She stood on tippy toes, trying to look over his shoulder, but the man was too tall and his shoulders too wide!
"Adam, I see you return." A man said.
Who was the man? Why was he here? Were there more humans than she thought? The thought made her smile with wide eyes. She wanted to see what kind of place the humans had created after the outbreak. Were they living in prosperity? She could see that they lived underground now, but were they used to such a life style.
Adam used his hand to keep her behind him, his hand wrapped around her upper arm. She wanted to see who he talked to, yet he wouldn't allow it.
"Is there someone behind you?" The man asked with curiousity. "Where is Rosie?"
"Rosie..." Adam started.
"She's dead...isn't she." It wasn't a question.
Adam looked away, dark brows drawn tight.
"Who is the person behind you?" The man suddenly asked.
Adam took a step back, pushing her back with him. Why did Adam have such a reaction to this unknown man before them? Still, she couldn't see who stood across from Adam. Yanking her arm out of his grasp, she stumbled back and fell on her bottom. Adam turned around slowly and looked down at her. She winced when she looked into those cold eyes of his. What had made this man so cold? Now she had a good view of the other man. His hair was white, white as snow! A shocked gasp left her lips. He was as tall and nearly as built as Adam, yet his features were not as hard. He looked like a playboy actually. His emerald eyes took her in and a grin tugged at his lushes lips, lips that were the color of pale roses His skin was smooth and flawless. Reminded her of peaches and cream.
"All the ladies have the same reaction when they see me." He chuckled then looked at Adam. "Who is this?"
"I'm Brook." She answered for Adam.
Adam scowled under his breath. What was his problem? She suddenly frowned with confusion.
"Well nice to meet you Brook, I'm Devyn." He announced.
Devyn walked over to her and held out his hand, a soft smile upon his face. She took that hand and let him pull her up. A feeling of de javu drifted through her. Adam had helped her up too, yet there hadn't been a smile on his face. Never.
