It has been three years since the events that had happened previously. The girls are between sixteen and seventeen now.
It seems that this world has stayed the same, except wraiths or magical girls do not exist, and never did. There has been no conception of anyone named Madoka during any point of time, yet Homura seems to have faint memories of her. There has been no conception of anyone named Homura up until now, who is now about to attend Mitakihara Highschool. She has little recollection of memories of the past, and the world that surrounds her is seemingly different from ever before.
