Work title borrowed from a lyric in Lay Me Down - Sam Smith.
I've been working on this oneshot for a couple of weeks. This is the first time I've written for Wolfstar, and the first time in years that I've written at M/M fic. I'm so proud of this one!
The night air bit at Remus's face as he hurried across the lawns of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in the direction of The Whomping Willow. The wind howled dramatically as it tore through The Forbidden Forest, causing the thick-set trees to shiver in the frigid night air. The sky was clear, the waxing gibbous moon barely illuminated Remus's path, causing him to skid and trip on the damp, muddy grass.
This time, it wasn't the proximity of the full moon that had Remus dashing off down the hidden passage, towards The Shrieking Shack. No . His head was close to bursting with everything that had come to light over the past several hours. Information that would change his life, and possibly someone else's, if his suspicions were indeed correct.
Immobilising the swinging arms of the tree, Remus squeezed through the hole at the center of the trunk. The last time he had taken this passage, it had been a whole lot easier to fit through the small gap in the wood. Now, Remus was forced to duck his head, narrow his shoulders and bend his knees in order to fit through. It hardly slowed him down, however, as he stumbled up the dark, hidden passageway that was as familiar to him as the castle itself.
The Shrieking Shack, one of the most haunted buildings in Britain, looked remarkably peaceful. Remus hauled himself up through the trapdoor and into the derelict space. He brushed the dust and cobwebs off of his robes, peering around for any hint of danger. He was about to approach a "mass murderer", after all.
The wind assaulted the shack as it had done the forbidden forest. A draft crept in through the crumbling walls, and the splintering wooden floor boards, making the house no warmer than it was outside. The building seemed to come alive in the gails, groaning like an old man each time a hearty gust passed through.Remus climbed the stairs, not particularly bothering to keep his footsteps silent. The man whom he assumed to be hiding here would pose no threat to him. Or at least Remus hoped. Still, he held his wand out, poised for attack, just in case Sirius Black decided to do something stupid.
The man in question, clearly already aware of the presence of an intruder, had pressed his back to the far wall of the dilapidated bedroom. He wore striped prison robes that were stained and torn, and barely clung to his emaciated frame. His hair, once the sole obsession of a seventeen year old boy, hung dirty and limp around his face. His yellow, waxy skin looked deceased, and his eyes sunken into his face.
Remus hardly recognized Sirius.
After his revelation earlier that evening, Remus had been uncharacteristically impassioned. He and Sirius shared an intense history. What started as a friendship and a brotherhood had blossomed into something that was infinitely more satisfying. But, the murder of their friends had caused their lives to spiral uncontrollably, and the finger of blame had been pointed.Remus had been angry for the past 13 years. He had dreamed up every scenario, and invented every reaction, should he come face to face with Sirius again. However the reality was so much different than he had expected.
Stunned, Remus stood in the doorway, his wand pointing towards the other man. Sirius made no effort to move. He stared at Remus with his gun-metal eyes, as if daring him to cast a spell.
"Remus." Sirius said, in a form of acknowledgment.
The cold, damp air was thick with tension. Even Remus, who clearly had the upper hand, couldn't have predicted his own actions. His heart was racing. What if he had jumped to the wrong conclusion? The weight of self-doubt fell onto his shoulders, and was dragging him towards the ground.
