Lemony Snicket used to think he wanted an adventure.

Adventures meant glory, heroics, and mysteries. Most importantly, they meant a chance to impress B. He dreamed that he would save the world one day, with B at his side.

Maybe that is why a pessimistic man like himself got caught up in a wild scheme involving a night at the opera, a poison dart, and the theft of a piece of his friend's tea set.

He should have known better.

He does now.

Long ago, Lemony learned that adventure has a twisted sense of humor. Heroics turned to murder, and his only glory was as a supposed arsonist on the lam.

Most importantly (a word which here means heart-wrenchingly), Beatrice was dead.
