4:00 A.M.
"The Poker Chip." The young girl read, as she removed her helmet from her head and sat it in her lap, feeling the rain splatter down on her merlot color hair. It was dark out in Raccoon City, and the only light source she could find was the glowing sign of a bar. She checked her watch. "4:00 A.M." It read. She looked back up, taking in her surroundings and stepping off her bike. She tread carefully, her hand placed on the handle of her revolver in its holster. After walking closer, she looked up into the window, analyzing the interior of the bar. There were only a few people in there, including a younger looking bartender with slick, black hair and a white tank, almost like a biker.
She slowly opened up the entrance and stepped inside, getting a few weird stares as she closed the door behind her. "Hey, kids aren't allowed in here, y'know." A voice boomed, and her head turned towards the source. It was an older looking man, with a strange scraggly beard. He looked to have had a glass eye as well. "Go on, get on out." The man pointed towards the door, clearly inebriated.
"Don't worry, sir. I'm not here for any trouble." She stated plainly, holding her helmet on her hip. "I'm only here to get out of the rain."
"You heard the girl, Benny. Lay off, alright?" Another voice had been heard right next to her. It was a jersey accent this time...the bartender. "What brings you in here, young ma'am?"
She made her way up to the barstools, sitting herself in one, and her helmet in the other free chair next to her. "I just made my way here from Melbourne on a ferry. I've been driving for hours. Just needed a place to rest." She replied to the man with a sigh. He nodded his head softly with a smile on his face.
"Melbourne. I could tell when you first spoke." He chuckled, then had a bit of an embarrassed look on his face. "Ah, wait. How rude of me! Forgot to introduce myself. My name's Spencer Black, but usually people call me Spades." He held a hand out for her to shake, and she accepted it. "Nice to meet you Spades. I'm Katara Hale. You can just call me Kat." She smiled in return.
"Nice to meet ya, Kat. Can I get you anything to drink? Soda, water, maybe some sweet tea?" Spades asked as he picked up a cup and started to wipe the inside of it. Katara thought for a moment before she spoke. "I'll just take some water. I'm quite parched, actually."
As soon as she gave him the word, he began to fill the glass with some ice cubes, and then water. He slid the glass towards her gently and she took it, immediately placing it to her lips and started to chug.
"Woah, jeez." Spades chuckled. "You must have been quite parched." He mimicked her accent jokingly.
"I packed some food and drinks for my trip, but I guess not enough." Katara sighed with a small laugh. "Say, Spades, do you know of any cheap motels I could crash in for a week or two? Just to get on my feet here in Raccoon City." Katara asked as she sat her glass down and wiped her mouth with her sleeve, getting rid of the dribble of water that had slipped down the side of her chin.
"Well, for a girl your age...the motels in Raccoon City aren't the best for you to stay in by yourself. There's some real creepos around here." He whispered the last part to only her, looking around to make sure that none of the other customers had heard. He took her glass and began to clean it, thinking to himself for a moment. Then the idea came to him like the flick of a switch.
"Hey, I got a spare bedroom in my apartment. I don't mind if you stayed there for a bit. No charge. I'll even let you help around the bar for some quick cash, if you're interested! I'm in need of an accomplice." Spades shrugged with a friendly grin.
Katara returned the friendly gesture with a smile and a nod. "Well, if you truly don't mind, that'd actually be great, I appreciate it."
"I'm glad I could be of service." Spades gladly accepted the praise from her, and he gave her a small, funny wink as he walked away to serve an upcoming customer.
