The sound of the doorbell at such an ungodly hour caused you to freeze, remaining frozen to the ground for a second or two. And when it rang again, you turned towards your bedroom door with your heart in your throat. Many different thoughts ran through your mind, thoughts of good...and of evil. Every possible dangerous thing that could happen to a lady living alone on the third floor of a nine storied apartment complex can to your mind. You rushed into a robe and made your way outside of the bedroom to the living room, passing through a short corridor as the doorbell sounded once again. Your heart once again skipped a beat and then another beat. Random? Maybe not? Now wasn't the time to be asking stupid questions but your mind couldn't help but to do so. It was the only way to keep your fear and check and also keep you from hyperventilating.

The doorbell rang again, followed by another ring and another ring. Then the rings began to come nonstop, unrelenting. Whoever was pressing the damn thing was getting really impatient with you for leaving them unattended to. You had initially planned to ignore the rings, hoping whoever it was would go away after not getting a reply, assuming you hadn't returned home. But now, that was obviously impossible. Whoever it was knew that you were home, and you could tell it was so from the repeated rings for the shrill noise didn't seem like it was willing to stop anytime soon. If it was neither a stalker, a serial killer or someone who desperately needed to see you, you didn't know who it was. After all, you were expecting no one.

The sound of the doorbell stopped for a moment. The sudden halt of the sound caused you to panic nervously. You waited for a while, silently praying and hoping that whoever was on the other side of the door had given up and left, only if were not so for the doorbell began in again in another desperate shell of rings. The sound caught you off guard causing your heart to jump out of your mouth and go back into it again in a nanosecond. You stood for a while contemplating whether to run away or to be brave and go to see who it was. You finally made up your mind and quickly went into the kitchen. There you simply chose a butcher knife from your sharp knife set. You held it nervously in your palm and trudged towards the door with half your heart in your mouth -not literally.

You finally arrived at the door of your home after a few seconds of walking. You could hear the sound of someone's fingers meeting the doorbell desperately before each shrill could be heard. You braced yourself for whatever was to come and asked in a soft voice despite your fear.

"Who are you?"

"Carmen." That was all you heard. You threw open the door that instant, unbothered by wether it was actually a ploy or a ruse to get you. And there she was, standing afore you in flesh and blood.
