Chapter #19
⚠️Needles⚠️
Louri’s POV
The kids took the news fairly well. Devon has attached himself to me and is on my back like a koala. When I asked him where he learned how to do it he said he learned by watching Mommy do it. Devon didn’t want to leave my side so he ended up in bed with Scarlett and I. I wake up to an empty bed and the smell of pancakes. I get dressed in my fatigues. I don't know if I am going to be needed at the base but I do have video calls and I can’t decide what to wear. I walk downstairs and see Scarlett and the kids in the kitchen as Scarlett is flipping pancakes. “Morning sleepyhead.” Scarlett says. “Morning everyone.” I say, and get multiple good mornings in return from the three kids. I go and wrap my arms around Scarlett’s waist like I always do and she holds up a cup of black coffee. “It’s got the Irish Cream syrup.” She says and I take it with one hand but keep Scarlett close with the other as she makes breakfast. “You should check Instagram,” Scarlett says with a sweet smile. “Why?” I ask skeptically. “You’ll see.” She says.“This fits my wife”
[ChrisEvans: Yes it does]
[LisaEvans: Agreed]
[MelanieSloan: That’s sweet]
[ElizabethOlsen: That’s why Scarlett would send Louri here favorite coffee in her care packages]
[LouriEvans: She does do that]“That’s sweet, thank you. But I don’t save the world, I just do my job.” I tell Scarlett. “You do save the world Mama.” Maya says. “You are my superhero Mama.” Devon says. “Yeah tat’s the super suit.” Louisa says now standing next to me pointing to my fatigues. “It’s my super suit huh?” I ask and she nods.
Scarlett’s POV
It was really cute this morning with Louisa, Maya, and Devon all saying Louri is a superhero. When Devon called Louri his superhero I could see the tears form in her eyes as a big smile appeared on her face. Devon is at preschool and the twins are at daycare. And Louri has just finished up her call. “Ready for me to shoot up?” Louri says holding the IVF needles. “Do you have to say it like that?” I ask, closing my laptop and pulling my shirt up. “Yes I do.” She laughs. “Ok here’s number one.” She says before giving me the shot. “Why do we have to do two?” I ask since I hate shots. “Because you have two ovaries.” She says. “That’s fair.” I say and I didn’t notice her do the other shot. “All done for today.” She says. “I can see why you are such a good medic.” I tell her. “Oh what makes you say that?” She says. “I didn’t even notice you did the second shot.” I tell her. “Oh yeah all I did was keep you distracted this is much easier than anything I’ve done in the field.” She says throwing away the needles in the sharps bin. “Hanukkah starts in two days.” I tell her. “I’ll find the menorah.” She says, giving me a kiss before going to the storage room. “We need to tell your family Louri.” I tell her and I hear her sigh. “I’ll tell my siblings. I can’t tell my mom that I’m leaving again. I can't see that fear in her face. She tries to hide it but it scares her when I go on deployment.” She says. “They are coming for Hanukkah. We can do it together. I wish Greg was there to have your back. But I trust you and I know you trust your unit so I will too.” I tell her she comes out of the storage room with the menorah and candles in hand. “You are right.” She says. “I normally am.” I joke to lighten the mood, making her chuckle. “Yeah you are.” She says. “You know I have a song I’ve wanted to play for you for a while now. I heard it once while on deployment and I’ve kept it on my playlist. I just need to use my guitar.” She says. “I finally get to hear you play.” I tell her. “Yeah you do.” She says. “What’s the song called?” I ask. “Travelin Soldier" by The chicks.” I tell her. “Ok here we go.” She says as she starts to strum the strings of the guitar.
“Two days past eighteen”
“He was waiting for the bus in his army green”
“Sat down in a booth in a cafe there”
“Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair”
“He's a little shy so she give him a smile”
“So he said would you mind sittin' down for a while”
“And talking to me, I'm feeling a little low”
“She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go”
“So they went down and they sat on the pier”
“He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care”
“I got no one to send a letter to”
“Would you mind if I sent one back here to you”
“I cried”
“Never gonna hold the hand of another guy”
“Too young for him they told her”
“Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier”
“Our love will never end”
“Waitin' for the soldier to come back again”
“Never more to be alone when the letter says”
“A soldier's coming home”
“So the letters came from an army camp”
“In California then Vietnam”
“And he told her of his heart”
“It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of”
“He said when it's getting kinda rough over here”
“I think of that day sittin' down at the pier”
“And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile”
“Don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while”
“I cried”
“Never gonna hold the hand of another guy”
“Too young for him they told her”
“Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier”
“Our love will never end”
“Waitin' for the soldier to come back again”
“Never more to be alone when the letter says”
“A soldier's coming home”
“One Friday night at a football game”
“The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang”
“A man said folks would you bow your head”
“For the list of local Vietnam dead”
“Crying all alone under the stands”
“Was the piccolo player in the marching band”
“And one name read and nobody really cared”
“But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair”
“I cried”
“Never gonna hold the hand of another guy”
“Too young for him they told her”
“Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier”
“Our love will never end”
“Waitin' for the soldier to come back again”
“Never more to be alone when the letter says”
“A soldier's coming home”
“I cried”
“Never gonna hold the hand of another guy”
“Too young for him they told her”
“Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier”
“Our love will never end”
“Waitin' for the soldier to come back again”
“Never more to be alone when the letter says”
“A soldier's coming home”I am crying by the end of the song. I feel like I can relate to the young woman in the song from when Louri and I first got together and her first deployment after we got together. “Hey are you ok?” Louri asks as her arms wrap around my shoulders. “It’s like when we first got together and we would write to each other when you were on deployment.” I tell her. “Yeah that’s why I like it so much.” She says. “Except I’m Marines not an Army.” She adds. “And a damn good one too.” I tell her. “I love you My Girl.” She says. “I love you My Marine.” I tell her before connecting our lips.
