Chapter 1

Yuto

Somewhere below Mariejois

I have freed myself from the cell where they kept prisoners like me for their experiments. Escaping was my only option. Getting tortured and doing different tests was like a nightmare, except that I was living in one already. Time had passed, and I had recently turned ten years old, and finding a way out was not going to be easy. It seemed like a massive dungeon below Mariejois. I try to navigate through the labyrinth when I hear a guard shouting, "THERE HE IS." I turned and quickly ran for my life, so they didn't know where I was heading. Suddenly, I saw an opening near a statue and crawled—into a smaller hallway with no other exit points other than straightforward.

At the end of the hallway, a locked cell could be seen together with three fruits inside. One of the bars had rusted entirely, and I kicked it with my feet. The rusty bar broke, leaving a little gap for a child to pass through. As we ate anything in this prison, I tried each fruit. The fruits tasted disgusting. Never would I eat those again. Finally, the guard found me, and I had nowhere to go. The guards told me to surrender, but I was not returning. I clenched my fists in anger, ready to fight, when a vast quake broke out. The cell behind me had started to crumble. I noticed some aura in my hand, causing the earthquake. In a final struggle, I once again clenched my fist and focused. This time the ground between the guards and me split, and I fell from the sky, kilometers down. I realized that this must be the end for me, I thought. A large wave suddenly caught me, and the water washed me away.

Chapter 2

Kay

20 years later

My foster sister screamed as she woke me up to tell me something. Older sister, Kay, we just received a paper with an invitation under our door. I quickly took the form from her hand and read the lines. Dear Kay, you have been selected as one of eight participants to complete a battle tournament. The tournament will take place in the old stadium in 2 days. If you wish to participate, bring this letter with you. The winner will receive a reward of 1.000.000.000 Berries. I thought this was a very odd time to receive such an invitation. I wrinkled the paper and put it into my pocket. Breakfast is ready, my foster mom said. My foster sister and I hurried down to take our seats and eat.

I suddenly started to remember how I got here 20 years ago. A guard was about to take me back to a cell in a dungeon. I was eight years old and didn't know much about my life. All that I knew was that there was something special about me. I didn't want to return to my cell and ran away. The guard chased me and, in the end, had me cornered. Suddenly, the ground started shaking and splitting. The part where I stood began to collapse, and I felt like falling kilometers down. The last thing I remember was washing up on a shore, and a married couple had just found me. They asked me where my parents were, and I said I had none. The Lady, who was pregnant then, told me I could live with them. Gladly, I accepted and started living with my foster parents. Soon afterward, she gave birth to my foster sister, and we grew up together. One day my foster father went on a trip just as I turned 18 and didn't return since. My foster mother told me it wasn't safe anymore for me to be with them and suggested I meet a master who could teach me how to defend myself. I accepted and moved far away from the place where we lived. Finally, after ten years of training, I returned briefly to visit my foster mom and sister. I told them how I got trained in something called Haki, which utilizes my spiritual energy in this case for protection. I learned armament and observation Haki; as I progressed, I also mastered advanced armament Haki.

What are you thinking? My foster sister asked me as I remembered everything I had gone through. Nothing, I said. I remember how much I have missed you, sister. My mom said, " eat up, " and told me to help my sister with the chores. Later that night, my foster mom started a fire and told us that we would have a barbecue. My foster sister and I were sitting near the fire when they began questioning me. So, are you going to participate in the tournament or not? I don't know, so I told my foster sister and thought about it. My foster mom begged my sister to get the meat she had prepared. As she started to walk away, I took the piece of paper with the invitation to read again near the fire. A new message began with the word "Join Us" and a sigil of a phoenix. My sister had fetched the meat and put it onto the grill. So, are you still reading that invitation? I looked back at the paper and noticed the message was gone. I told my sister I was going to participate.
