✎ what is gyaru?
ギャル "gyaru" is a transliteration of the english word "gal." gyaru is the name of a subculture in japanese fashion which originated in the 1970's with the popularity of a brand of jeans called "gurls." the peak of gyaru street fashion happened in the 1990s and 2000s.
it is usually characterized by bleached, big hair, decorative nails, flashy, colorful fashion and dramatic makeup. famous gyarus that helped outline the era include;
⇾ tsubasa masuwaka (creator of tsubacolle, videos still on youtube)
⇾ kumiko funayama
⇾ rie matsuoka (okarie)
⇾ hikari shiina (pikarin)
⇾ satomi yakuwa
⇾ sayoko ozaki
⇾ rina sakurai
there are very many substyles underneath the umbrella of gyaru, some very popular ones including:
— kogyaru
— ganguro
— hime gyarugyaru fashion is very female-dominated, but all genders, races, and nationalities are invited to be gyaru!
fun fact • male gyarus are called "gyaruos"
gyaru heavily promotes a lifestyle of happiness, self expression, and positivity! at their peak, they had sort of a negative image in japan. however, gyarus have the intention of positivity and happiness!
all age groups can be a gal, but some specific styles (like onee gyaru/お姉ギャル) are specifically geared toward a specific group like older adult gals, or literal kids.
