I wake up to the soft buzzing on my alarm. Attihiko is calmly sleeping and I feel the soft rise and fall of his chest as I slide off.
I quickly dart off to my house and grab my luggage, loading it up into my car, which I will drive to a friends place and they will take me to the airport and take my car back. I sigh. I start up my car and make my way on the old road that no one ever uses besides me. Once I reach my friends house, they take over driving as I zone out. Am I really doing this? Do I really want to see their shitty faces again? Is this the best option? Whatever. I'll be fine. I hope.
I'm dropped off at the airport and pass TSA easily. I have half an hour to spare, so I end up scrolling on my phone until I'm called to board. I ignorantly walk towards my seat and settle down. It's all okay so far...
"Sorry! Oh I am so sorry!" I look up to see who's speaking to me. A young woman, not much older than me, and a presumably five year old kid with her. "I accidentally dropped my phone.." the lady said, continuing to apologize. "Hey hey it's okay don't apologize" I say, handing her the phone. Even if I live in isolation, I know how to be a decent person.
The two sit next to me, the mom fidgeting softly. "Are you okay?" I ask in a calm, collected voice. "I'm fine, me and my son are going to visit my....husband is all, we're just a little nervous.." I nod. "It must be tough" I say. "It is, I don't know what will happen...." She replies. The two of us end up making small talk as her child dozes off. Turns out, her name is Maria, she's 27 and her son Timothy is 5. She and her husband have had a strained relationship, but she wants Timothy to meet his father, so they're going to California. Maria seems like a sweet but troubled soul. Someone I can relate to in a way. The troubled part I mean. To me, she is almost the sister I never had, the one I would've wanted to grow up with. I softly doze off, missing the warm grasp of Attihiko in the process.
"Attention all passengers, we have arrived at California" the pilot continues her speech but I ignore it. My body feels oddly cold. Maria and I part ways and I look for my family.
As expected, my mom is there looking bored, and my sister is on her phone making thirst traps. Ugh. They haven't changed a bit. "Oh, there you are" my mom says. "Come on brat, grandma has been waiting for you." My sister rolls her eyes at me. I must look miserable, as many people give me pitiful glances.
The car ride is awfully silent. The only conversation is held between my mom and my sister, as if I don't exist, which is fine with me. I get out of the car solemnly and head to the apartments spare room to drop my stuff. We're supposed to meet my grandma, but I just don't feel like it. I hear the familiar noise of screaming. They're calling my name. My mom and sister. I only pay attention when it's too late however, as they barge in and my sister drags me by my hair down to the car.
It's nothing I haven't gone through before.
