Me and my dad lived in an old tower high up far from the town below us. We weren't far or close to the town, It was a roughly thirty minute walk to get there but it still always felt so close, It was something that you could see but was just out of reach. Me and my father never went into the town together. My father did to help prepare the annual Spirit's eve festival every year claiming he did it to catch up on old friends, joking that Spirit's eve was the one day the townspeople would just assume he was in costumes.
My father was neither stocky nor slender, Tall or short, with long or short hair, he was simply everything all at once. His hair had been turned a permanent shade of purple due to a magic accident from a few years ago and he would always joke that it was 'better than balding'. But none of that side of him applied when I asked to go into town.
He was never against my ideas of going into the town by myself, he would simply just frown a little and explain that I was still to young to go and that it was safer for me to stay in the tower and simply be. As I was.
"You have to focus on your studies." My father would say frequently, Since he didn't know my magic it was up to me to learn the most at the monthly meetings or in my own time. "Magic is a great responsibility." He would add and I would nod and agree but never stop wondering what it was like to be part of that small town.
There was only one resident we would ever interact with, and that was one of my father's close friends, The Farmer who lived on the Sunny Veil Farm, He often helped my father get supplies and loved teaching me about crops and when they grew. He was always so happy but never seemed to want a family claiming that agriculture was all he needed.
Eventually we stopped visiting but my father would never tell me why we did. Saying only it was better not to go anymore. It wasn't until today that I learned what happened to the farmer, It also happened the day my father sent me to live on that old farm.
A morning where my dad takes time to prepare breakfast was always a sign that something important was happening, normally I would just rummage around for foragables and make something but today he had prepared something he normally only did for my birthdays, Berry Oatmeal.
"I think you've become old enough to learn what happened to the old Farmer up on Sunny Veil" My father stated, much like he normally was his voice and expression was hard to read. I didn't say anything and allowed my father to continue, "He passed away a few years ago, The last visit we had was the visit he gave me ownership of Sunny Veil...Because he knew he wouldn't last much longer." I couldn't help but release a small gasp and felt a few tears form in my eyes, I had known the farmer for so long he felt like family to me, I would miss his old suggestions and advice on plants.
"I - I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I delayed it as long as possible, But today you had to know." My father's voice cracked and it was clear he hadn't been able to process the grief well over the years, I inhaled and exhaled trying to control myself it wasn't the time yet, and clearly the morning meal had not ended. "Why?" I asked my father not looking into his eyes, "Today is the day you will move on that farm." He replied, his voice didn't sound sad or happy about the news it was clear it just simply...was. And I understood, Every Wizard must abide his own residence to study his own craft, It was more of a unspoken rule than anything else but it was clear my dad had waited for this. Sooner or later I would have moved on that farm, Whether the Farmer had been alive to help me or not.
"When do I leave?" I asked my dad, sadness still lingering in my voice from the news, "As soon as dawn breaks tomorrow. I'll help you move but as soon as you move onto that farm unless an emergency occurs - and a real emergency happens - you are not to ask help of me."
I nodded and swallowed down a sob, This was fine. I would be fine. Who doesn't love grief and being told they're moving in the same day? "I'll start packing after breakfast." I replied, trying to keep my voice even.
The rest of the day went by in motions, Breakfast ended and I started packing things up, All my logs of plants in their uses in teas and potions, healing and poison effects. The best methods to use certain plants. How they grow, Old notes the Farmer had given to me shortly before the visits ended and few sentimental items to remind me of this old tower once I left.
Soon the next morning came and my dad was helping me build the portal to move all my boxes and packages and myself as well, He told me that the town had already been informed someone new would be moving in and that the Mayor should have sent basic supplies towards the cottage. He asked if I remembered the layout of the town and I lied and said I did, How hard could it be to navigate such a small town?
Soon we were hugging goodbye and as I stepped through the portal I could have sworn I heard my father cry.
