I swear to god if i have to sit in this lecture hall for five more minutes listening to mr. magnon talk about cell division im going to blow my brains out.

we've been on this topic for a full week now, and its a struggle every class not to fall asleep.  i sit in the back corner, pretending to take notes about something i learned in junior year of high school.

"and that, scholars is the end of my time.  enjoy your weekends!" he says with a cough.  he looks about a hundred years old and im not really sure he's the best person to be teaching us advanced bio chem.

i'm not even sure why im in this class.  i'm an english lit major, but i needed a science credit and it seemed fun.  but if i could go back in time and shake some sense into myself i would just take physics with everyone else.

i pack up my stuff and head out into the brisk fall air, weaving through clusters of people and starting my walk home.  my phone buzzes in my pocket and i take it out and turn it on.

josie:  hey! do u wanna go to a frat party tonight? starts at 10!

juliet:  yeah sure! do u wanna pregame at ur dorm?

josie: ofc babes!! come over i miss u <3

by the time i've showered, eaten dinner, and put on my outfit (flared jeans and a cute black crop top w/ my trusty chucks) its 8:30 and time to start walking over.

i open the door to madness.  josie has obviously been drinking for a while already and is performing some kind of interpretive dance for her roommates Becca and Rose, who are sitting on the couch trying to hold in their laughter.

They turn towards me when i walk in and a chorus of 'heyy!' 'took you long enough' and 'Juliet save us she wont stop dancing' greets me.  i laugh and close the door behind me to shield any passerby's eyes.

'how long have yall been drinking for? i diddn't know we were starting early'  i say as i go to the fridge and make myself a vodka red bull, heavy on the vodka.

the girls eye each other for a minute, exchanging layered glances and rose bursts into tears.  Josie and becca comfort her, rubbing her back and saying 'there, there,'  'it's ok hun', and josie turns to me and says softly 'derek cheated on her'

'ugh that douchebag.  you can do so much better babe.  men are trash'

'i know i know, but i loved him.  i really thought we had something special'  her voice quivers as she speaks and another round of tears pours down her face.

'well im sure theres gonna be a ton of cute guys at the sigma pi party,  you just need a rebound hottie'

beccas words make her laugh and she wipes her tears and sniffles 'you're right- ill feel better once there's more alcohol in my system'

~

by the time we get to the frat house, the party's in full swing.  theres people crowded on the lawn and about twenty people in line ahead of us.  thrumming bass seeps though the house and the windows are dark, neon strobe lights dancing behind the glass.

'it's fucking cold out i wish i wore pants' josie shivers out

'me too girl.  or at least a jacket.' agrees rose

'we'll be inside soon enough and then it'll be too warm'  i pipe in

sure enough, the air inside the house is hot and sticky, people packed like sardines from wall to wall.  we shove our way through the crowd into the kitchen, where it's blessedly less crowded.

'ooh they got a full bar, we're boujie tonight.'  josie says as she pours herself a drink.

the other girls follow suit and we bring our cups onto the dance floor.  i'm not the most social person, in fact i'd say im antisocial compared to my friends, but i love a good party.  bodies packed up against each other, voices woven together, the music loud, the bass pumping.
