She was used to her crawling in through the window
Taking off that stupid outfit
(At least she had finally agreed to a bit more padding and protective material)
She would collapse into bed as quietly as she could
Unaware that her lover was still awake
Unable to fall asleep with the worry in her mind
Creasing her forehead as the months went on
Tonight she did not crawl
She fell, the smack of her body on the wooden flooring drawing her girlfriend's attention
She called out her name
No answer
She hurried out of bed
The love of her life was crumpled on the ground
It was not the first time
Nor would it be the last
She patched her up, laying her on their bed
Reprimanded her
She was angry
You could've died
The heroine was quiet
It was just a little girl... they cornered her and they were–
She couldn't finish
The other woman's rage dissipated as it always did
She could never be mad at her for long, she knew she didn't have a right to be
Because her girl was a hero
And she didn't know what she went through out there in the pursuit of saving others
What she sacrificed to be so selfless
The months passed
And she came home with more bumps and bruises
And knife wounds and broken ribs
I can't lose you
You know why I do what I do... I can't stop, they need me
God she loved her she loved her she loved her
So much it ached and burned and twisted her insides
But her woman was married to her city
She was public property so
She could never truly be hers
Not even when they found her body in the river
