Not again... you think to yourself after being woken up by your awful alarm clock. Every day is the same. You wake up at 06:30 AM, go to work, get home, have dinner, and go to sleep. Only to repeat the cycle the next day. "Is this what life is all about?" you mumble to yourself as you get dressed. We go to school in order to get a job and work nine-to-five until we retire when we're old. You never liked this system and wonder which idiot invented it only for the rest of the world to follow.
If you're lucky, you even have time to watch Netflix on some evenings and see your family during the weekends. You don't see them a lot since you moved away for college and found a job in the same city. Like that isn't enough, you also barely have any money left after paying all your bills, so going out or doing something fun isn't a regular thing either. Not that you're someone who likes to go out much. Still, it would have been nice for a change. Well... at least it's Friday so you have the weekend to look forward to and some time to catch up on some sleep.
You did look forward to going to bed. Ever since you were a child, you had experienced very realistic dreams. In those dreams you would be in a beautiful forest, near a calm river, or in the mountains. Sometimes you would even see other people. As you got older, you started having them less, but you still had the occasional dream once in a while. It was very special and magical to you because only you had access to this "realm". Besides, it made you feel like you were living a more exciting life, even if it wasn't real. It's a great way for you to escape the dull and monotone pace of real life. Whenever you have one of those dreams, it feels like a treat, like an adventure. You couldn't get enough of them. Time moved too slowly during the day and the sunrise came too soon.
You always liked the city you live in, but after so many years of seeing the same buildings and same people, you started feeling a little uncomfortable, like it's holding you back somehow. On your way to work you notice that today is no exception. Again, you feel uneasy, as always.
Actually... no, today was different after all. You didn't just feel uneasy, it was worse than that. Perhaps it's the cloudy weather or the fact that everyone looks extremely gloomy. You shrug off these thoughts since you have arrived at work. Who cares, you need to get going now before you're late.
"Did you see the news?! I'm scared..." you hear someone saying near the coffee corner. Something is definitely going on. No one is even working at this point, everyone is too worried to do anything else. You grab your phone and already see the headlines.
OFFICIALLY DECLARED: WORLD WAR III
"What in the world...?" you say out loud, but you were interrupted by a siren. The Emergency Alert System is going off! This is absurd! They announce that everyone is required to stay inside until further notice.
Your phone rings, it's mom. As scared as you were, you tried to be as calm as possible to not let her get too worried. She must be freaking out herself. "Honey, where are you? Is everything all right? Be careful and make sure to stay inside!" mom says. "Yes mom, I'm fine. But what's going on?" you ask. Outside, you see the sky turning the brightest white you have ever seen. It's so bright that everyone gets blinded by the illumination, even when being indoors, and people start screaming due to sheer panic. Everyone quickly tries to hold onto something or hide. You're no different. It seemed to be almost by instinct that you decide to hide underneath your desk and close your eyes. Some seconds pass by and the bright light is immediately followed by an earthquake and the faintest idea of what could be described as the loudest bang ever.
Was this a nightmare?
