The Sky fell dark as the apartment fell silent. Late night was the only time things in this troubled shack seemed to die down; and not because people were sleeping but due to the morbid lack of presence. As always, Violette and Cameron Blaze were left another night to do things for themselves; but this night something was different.
Violette's POV
"Violetteeeee" screamed my younger brother from his bedroom.
What did he need now? Was he really still awake?
"What?" grumpily I asked. Right when I thought I finally was gonna get some sleep; I should've known better.
Slowly I rolled my limp body off the couch causing my thin sheet to fall onto the floor. I forced myself to get up. Still no response.
"Whaaaaaat" I repeated this time much louder and irritated as I carried myself, half asleep, to his bedroom door.
"Can you speak....... Please?" Spoke out from me to the young boy who was just stupidly staring in his twin sized bed.
"I'm hungry" Cameron finally confessed.
His confession caused me to exhale deeply and lose all eye contact I had previously made. Hidden deeply inside me is always guilt, that builds up with every night that passes by. I can't help but feel like it's my fault. Maybe if Kaylen hated me a bit less then she wouldn't put Cam through what she puts me through; hell, I don't even know what I did. I know she hated her brother for dating a "white" woman, especially one who already had a kid (Me) and says that he wouldn't be in the bad place he is today if it weren't for my mom.
Sometimes I just feel like Cameron would be better off without me; I try, but it only gets us so far. I would ask kids at school to get extra food for me and then save it and bring it home, but people aren't as nice as they used to be. I'd also ask the lunch lady for a little something extra but then she'd ask if everything was okay at home, putting that to an end. For these past few days I haven't known what to do..........
A thick silence had enveloped the room, but my thoughts and new ideas managed to squeeze their way out. "I will be back", I spoke, leaving Cameron astonished. "Wait what?" Raising up out of the bed, he shouted. "I'm just going to the apartment upstairs, it won't take that long," I reassured. "Can I come with you?" He asked, pulling back his covers. "Please". "No, Kaylen will freak if she comes back and you're gone too" I said as if he were insane for even asking. "B-but,what if that guy she dates comes"he stuttered. "Brian? He won't hurt you, from what I see he just talks a whole lot of shit" I respond snootily as I begin walking towards the door. "Wait" Cameron shouted with worry painted onto his face as I grabbed my black jean coat, opened the door, and quickly closed it behind me.
The brisk fall air filled my pale skin like warm coffee soothes the body. This has always been my favorite season. My black boots stepped up the cheaply graveled stairs of the old apartment building. It was nighttime but our neighborhood was very much awake. I took a few more steps before reading off the numbers to a familiar door. I took my hand out my pocket and knocked on the hard door as the wind whispered. A few seconds went by before a familiar face appeared at the door.
His smile was bigger than ever. "So I see you made it'' he said as his dark brown skin twinkled under the moonlight. God he was charming but I'm not stupid. "I'm only here for the money Hayden so you can stop with the googly eyes" I stated attempting to end his weak act. He let out a short sigh and just began looking at the ground. The wind whistled once more and chill bumps began covering my stiff arms. My instincts caused me to push past him into the dim apartment, but a high-pitched voice startled me.
