What Could Someone Learn From The Five People You Meet In Heaven?
What happens when someone dies? Do they get into heaven? In the book, The
Five People You Meet In Heaven, some of the more dominant themes are sacrifice being a part of life, strangers also being family, and anger being a poison. Eddie, the main character, dies and throughout the book, he learns all of these lessons and more.
Beginning with the first person Eddie meets in heaven, the Blue Man taught Eddie a very important lesson about family. The main lesson he had learned from the Blue Man was, "Strangers are just family you have yet to come to know " (Albom 49). This demonstrates that both family and strangers can be very important, and all are family. This teaches Eddie that although he never knew the Blue Man, he was a small part of Eddie's life. Eddie and the Blue Man were strangers until they encountered each other when Eddie was a kid going to grab a baseball he lost out in the street. The Blue Man had swerved his truck out of the way of Eddie, ending his life with a fatal heart attack. Eddie then went on to meet his second person.
In addition to Eddie's first person, Eddie went on to meet his second person, his Captain from when he went to war. His Captain taught him, "...Sacrifice is a part of life " (Albom 93). This shows that sacrifices are part of life, but they can also sometimes be beneficial. Sometimes, sacrifice can be a gain. For example, a sacrifice like Eddie's was beneficial because he saved the little girl's life so she can go on living her life. He then moves on to his third person.
Finally, Eddie's third person, Ruby, also had an interesting lesson to teach Eddie. Ruby tells Eddie about her life, and how she was the person Ruby Pier was named after. Her husband named the Pier after her. Eddie is taught, "Holding anger is like a poison. It eats you from the inside." (Albom 141). This indicates Ruby's main lesson; anger and hatred are unpleasant feelings. It would be absolutely ridiculous of someone to keep anger or hatred for a long time.
In conclusion, the themes sacrifice, family, and anger teach Eddie lessons that he could give to others when he moves on to his heaven as well. He learns sacrifice from the Captain. In addition, he also learns about strangers and family from the Blue Man. Finally, he learns about anger from Ruby. These themes can apply to usual day to day routines by teaching someone to appreciate family, sacrifices, and to not hold grudges against people.
