"Kai wake up you have an hour and a half to get ready for school!"

"Uuuuuuughghghgghgghghhhhh." Kai let out a groan to rival a zombie and ran a hand down her face, smacking her lips and cringing at the dryness of her mouth.

She rolled to the side of her bed and forced herself to start the day, grumbling all the while. After putting on her uniform she brushed her hair back into a french braid. She couldn't decide if she liked the uniform or hated it. The Gotham Academy uniform had a crisp black shirt, a royal blue tie, covered by a grey sweater or sweater vest, and a royal blue blazer with a matching pair of slacks or a black skirt. It was stifling at times, but some days she was grateful, she didn't have to pick out an outfit everyday.

Once she was done preparing for the day she sighed and went down to eat breakfast and make sure all her bags were packed.

Once in the kitchen, Kai looked at the clock and scarfed down the rest of her toaster waffles, "oh shoot! How long was I daydreaming?"

"Kai honey I'm sorry but I have to leave, my boss called me in early, will you be able to make the bus still? I can always call your auntie June to see if she can take you."

Kai sighed, this happened a lot, her mom worked odd jobs and one of her current bosses liked to call her in at random times. Oh well, if she hurried she could hopefully catch the bus and not have to bother June. She wasn't actually her aunt by blood but she's one of the only people her mom knew when they moved to Gotham, so June had been in Kai's life for a while. She was a small, warm, and boisterous woman who worked as a corporate lawyer. Kai had gone to see one of her trials, she was absolutely lethal in court, like a completely different person.

"It's alright mom I can make the bus, you don't have to call June, I think she said she had to attend an early meeting with a client today anyway."

Her mom was running through the house fixing her work uniform and attempting to put up her hair in a neat ponytail, "Okay baby, but if you miss the bus please don't walk again, call June or take a taxi, I'll leave you some money." She stopped to give her a hug and kiss her forehead, "I love you, don't forget that. Bye!"

Kai sighed once more and started her own run through the house. Keys, phone, wallet, gym bag, backpack, some snacks, jacket, and black boots... did she already grab her phone? Whatever, she needed to leave now and probably run or she'd actually miss the bus.

"Okay, okay, time to go. Gotta go. Go, go, go. School time. So fun. Okie dokie, yup two minutes to make it to the bus stop. And now lock the door." She almost flew out the door and fumbled with her keys before she was able to lock the door of her apartment . "Ahhhhhh. Stairs, don't fall. Oop almost fell. Haha, screaming inside. Why do we have to be on the 5th floor?"

She sprinted down the stairs, missing one and feeling her heart drop but not stopping. Once she got to the bottom she was out of breath but she couldn't be late another day. The people at Gotham Academy were already standoffish with her, Kai was there on an academic scholarship after all, not because of mommy and daddy's money or some alumni legacy acceptance process. Don't confuse it, the kids there were smart enough to get scholarships too, but they didn't need them so they still viewed her as someone different. She couldn't afford to lose that scholarship, her mom would be heartbroken, so most of the time, she ended up sprinting around before school to be on time.

Kai shook her head to clear her thoughts and made the last push, she heard the bus coming up the street. Luck must have been on her side because she made it with only seconds to spare. Getting on the bus, she fought to hold back the urge to wheeze and gasp for breath.

She took a seat near the back and shuffled through her bag until she found her phone, moving it to the pocket of her jacket. After that she started the process of making sure she had all of her work done, she had a full load of classes this year and some of them were mental murder. It sucked even more because there were times when the Astronomy teacher would give out extra credit to those who would see any major astronomical events and come with documentation the next school day. Kai wasn't going to let an extra credit opportunity pass by, so those days she had to borrow Junes car to drive out of Gotham to even see any astronomical phenomena because of how polluted the air is in the city, which resulted in late nights and barely any sleep.
