- You must be Jennie, right? the lady in front of me asks, whom I assume is the university director.
I nod my head in response and politely reply.
- Yes, it's me.
- Welcome to our prestigious university. You'll love it here, and if you need anything, don't hesitate to talk to Miss Helena. she continues.
I turn to Miss Helena, who smiles kindly at me.
- Your roommates are Aria and Layla. You'll meet them by the end of classes. They'll help you settle in here. Miss Helena informs me.
- Now that you have everything you need, we'll let you rest. See you tomorrow. says the director.
They leave our apartment, and I flop down on the couch.
What a day.
I look around the room with a smile.
So, this is life in the United States?
I glance at my suitcases one last time before falling asleep on the couch.

- Shh, Layla, you'll wake her up!
- Come on, it's not every day that we have Koreans in front of us.
- Where did you get that from? What makes you think she's Korean?
- Trust me, as a big fan of K-dramas, I can assure you she's Korean.
I slowly blink my eyes and sit up to see two girls in front of me, whom I guess are my roommates. One is blonde and the other has pink-colored hair.
When they see that I'm awake, they fall silent.
- Happy now? You woke her up! the blonde says.
- She would have woken up sooner or later anyway, the other one says.
- Hi, I say to stop them from arguing.
The blonde focuses her attention on me and smiles.
- Sorry about that... she says annoyed. I'm Aria... she introduces herself. And this is Layla, she says, pointing to the other girl. We're your roommates.
- Nice to meet you, I'm Jennie, I introduce myself in return.
- You're Korean, right? Layla asks.
I nod to confirm.
She sticks her tongue out at Aria and teases her.
- I told you so! she proudly exclaims. Pay up, $10 for me.
- In your dreams.
- I'm Canadian, but poor Aria is American. She doesn't have any heritage.
- Shut up Layla. she said before throwing a cushion at his face.
Layla bursts into laughter while Aria gives her a dirty look.
- I love that our university is international, so we can easily find our soulmates. Layla says. And we can meet Korean friends like Jennie, for example.she adds, sitting down next to me.
- You're not going to find one anytime soon, I assure you."
- Whatever. I'm even sure my soulmate could be Carson, but of course, he's in a relationship with that...
- Why are all the girls attracted to that guy, seriously? Aria complains. "He's as dumb as he is handsome.
- And he has those damn abs, those lips... Plus, we had an eye contact this morning.
I grimace, not really understanding what they're talking about since I don't know this Carson guy.
- Delulu is solulu. Aria teases.
This time, it's Aria who gets a cushion thrown at her face.
The rest of the evening, we talked and laughed a lot. They helped me unpack my suitcases and explained how things work here. I find them really welcoming and nice. Before falling asleep, I called my mom to tell her about my first day and ended up sleeping next to Layla, who insisted I sleep with her.
I think I'll be fine.
At least, that's what I thought...
