I looked up to see my best friend Ana waving at me, signaling for me to come over. It had been the most hectic week of my life with all the graduation preparations. I felt exhausted and drained; even the graduation gown I was wearing felt heavy on me.
I had a presentation to do today, so as the dedicated student I am, I memorized and practiced it all night. This was a big day for any graduate, including me, but I was already tired to the bones before it even started. Looking at my best friend, who looked so happy and energetic—God, this girl is never tired, not with schoolwork, exams, or anything else—I felt a pang of envy.
Loosening my hairband, I sighed in relief as the air cooled my scalp. The ponytail had been so tight it was hurting me. I stood up, adjusted my clothes, and dusted off non-existent dust before walking over to where Ana was standing with her family.
"Hey, good afternoon," I greeted her mom and dad, whom I'd become familiar with since starting college. They were the sweetest, kindest people, and I loved them just as much as they loved me.
"Girl, you look horrib—" Ana began, but I cut her off with a roll of my eyes. Who wouldn't look horrible after all the speech preparations? I glanced around and saw that everyone else seemed energetic. I must be the only one having a rough start today.
My head snapped to the side when I heard my name. A blonde guy with an average look walked up to us. Jake was his name; he had a crush on me for ages, but I didn't feel the same. I was relieved I wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.
"Hey, Liz. I'll come back soon. Enjoy your big day before then," Ana whispered playfully. I gave her a side-eye as she walked her parents to some seats and bolted out of the graduation hall for who-knows-what.
"It's finally graduation day," Jake said, and I forced a smile, nodding. This guy never gave up.
"What are your plans now, Lizzy?" he asked, using the annoying nickname he always gave me. Ugh, give me patience.
"Mmm, why do you ask?" I replied, sounding genuinely curious.
"To see if I can fit in somehow. You know I'll never give up on you. So, would you like to go on a date with me?" His hopeful eyes made me feel guilty. I had rejected him a hundred times already.
I wondered why I kept rejecting him. He was handsome, kind, intelligent—there was nothing wrong with him. So why?
"Can we talk about this later, after the event?" I suggested. He smiled widely.
"I'm glad it's not a straight rejection. See you later." My eyes followed him as he walked away, beaming like a teenager. Maybe I should really give this a chance.
I spotted Ana coming back with a woman in her early fifties and a man. She must have gone to fetch them. "Lizzy, Lizzy, is your lover boy gone?" she teased, using the horrible nickname Jake called me. I glared at her before rolling my eyes and shifting my gaze to the people behind her.
"This is my aunt and cousin that I've been telling you about—the ones who live in New York. Remember?" Ana said, looking at me intently. I didn't remember much; Ana talked about everything, and it was hard to keep up.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Elizabeth," I said, forcing a smile and shaking hands with the woman. When I turned to shake hands with the man, I froze.
His gray eyes were locked on mine, and my breath hitched. I must have been blind not to notice him sooner—or was it the exhaustion? This man was the most handsome I had ever seen. Black slick hair, a sharp jaw, a straight nose, almond-shaped gray eyes—he looked like a Greek god.
