~ The Caribbean, 1907
"Mommy?" I said quietly as I tiptoed into her and Daddy's room. The moonlight peeked through the flowing curtains, casting a soft glow across the room of our classy vintage beach house. The walls were adorned with faded light turquoise wallpaper, peeling in some places. The air was thick with the salty scent of the Caribbean sea, drifting in through the open window, carrying with it the distant sounds of waves crashing on the shore. My mommy was at her vanity table, brushing her long golden hair that stood out among her light brown eyes and mid tone skin. Gee, I wish I had inherited her beautiful gorgeous blonde locks, but instead, my hair was sort of a light brown. I guess it's kinda pretty.
"Why yes, Isabella, darling?" my mother replied in a voice that was as smooth as the silk sheets beneath her. Her eyes held a glint of annoyance, though she tried to mask it with a sweetness that I knew was fake. "What do you need?" I hesitated, my small voice barely audible in the vastness of the room.
"Well... I've been... I've just been... lonely." I squeaked, my eyes fixed on the worn-out carpet beneath my feet. The flickering candlelight on her vanity table reflected in her eyes, making them look like deep pools of melted chocolate.
"Oh, I see. Then go play with your friends." she suggested, her words as dismissive as the breeze rustling the palm trees outside. But playing with my friends wouldn't fill the emptiness inside me. It wasn't just the nighttime that stopped me from doing so, it was the fact that all my friends had large traditional families with at least four children or more and they all just loved to play with each other. While I just stood in the corner, with no baby brother or diva elder sister like the rest of them.
"But I don't think I want to, mommy," I said, my voice barely a whisper. I could see the frustration in her eyes, a frustration that mirrored my own. I knew I was like a lost seashell on the vast beach, easily ignored, but I couldn't help it.
"Well then, don't complain to me that you're lonely," she retorted, her patience wearing thin. I bit my lip, trying to hold back tears. My mind raced, searching for a solution but I found none.
"What about your friend Tamika?" she suggested, her voice taking on a tone of forced cheerfulness. "Aren't you super close with her? Where is she?" I hesitated, then confessed,
"She's playing with her older sisters. I don't want to interrupt their family time. So what do I do?" The room seemed to close in around me as my mother's frustration grew even more.
"I don't know, Izzy! Figure it out for yourself! It isn't my problem!" she snapped, her patience finally shattering like glass hitting a tiled floor. Her words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. It was as if the very walls of our vintage beach house were closing in, trapping me in a world where I was invisible, unheard, and unloved. The tears welled up in my eyes as I felt the familiar ache of loneliness, gnawing at my heart. Desperation gripped me, and in that moment, I wished for nothing more than a sibling, someone to share my world with, someone who would understand the depths of my loneliness.
But instead of an understanding family member, I had my mother, whose eyes turned stormy with anger.
"And here we go again with this. Isabella, how many times do I have to say this?" she hissed, her frustration boiling over. "If I had any more children, all you'd be doing is fighting with them! And I don't wanna deal with it! You alone already give me enough trouble! You're as spoiled as a rotten egg! You get everything you want, and you never say thank you!"
"But I do! You...y-you just never listen to me!" I exclaimed, my voice breaking under the weight of my emotions.
"I do too! You ungrateful brat!" she shot back, her words laced with venom. "You only complain about everything because your life is perfect! There are a lot of little kids out there who have nothing! No home! No food! No mother! They are not as privileged as you!"
