"You're... going to eat at a different table?" Mezo asked, trying to comprehend what I'd just said.
"It's just for today, my friend. I'll be back tomorrow." I reminded him.
"That's alright!" Rikido Sato grinned, his spiky hair bobbing as he applied a nod to his statement.
"Yeah, no sweat!" Ojiro agreed.
Koda nodded as well. The three of them proceeded to peel away and find their usual table. However, Mezo stayed and looked me in the eye thoughtfully.
"Was it... something I did? Something I said?" Mezo bowed his head grimly.
Guilt washed through me, but I ignored it and replied, "You're just being dramatic, Mezo. I was feeling... spontaneous. That's all."
Mezo's face still dipped towards the ground but he made eye contact as he muttered, "Ok, then. I guess I'll see you in class."
I nodded weakly. After that, we both split off too. We would talk later. I'd make sure to make this up to him.
When I arrived at Shoto and Iida's table, Uraraka and Midoriya were mid-conversation. Whilst Midoriya normally bought food at school, today he'd packed his own lunch like Uraraka normally did. Shoto, Iida and Tsuyu always bought food, and as such they were not here.
I'd packed my lunch today too, but like Uraraka I normally made my own food. Today, it was salmon sushi (mother's perfectionist recipe of course), apple slices and a little brownie I picked up at the local supermarket over the weekend.
"Hey, Tokoyami!" Midoriya beamed politely.
"Hey, dude." Uraraka grinned as well, popping a little blueberry into her mouth afterwards.
"Hello." I nodded.
I sat opposite the two best friends and started to unpack my lunch box. Shoto's face entered my mind again. Suddenly, I found myself smiling; I was going to be eating with him!
Uraraka cleared her throat and I looked up, expecting her to say something to Midoriya, however, "Hey, uh, Tokoyami? Why did you choose to sit with us? You're so much cooler than literally all of us."
Her comment caught me off guard, not just because it wasn't true but also because I had no idea how she'd come to that conclusion. I would have taken my time to respond properly, but Tsuyu and Shoto were soon to arrive after she spoke, and I wanted to speak to the unsuspecting Todoroki boy.
As such, I cryptically replied, "I'm not as cool as you think I am."
Uraraka wrinkled her nose and smirked as if I was pulling her leg as the other two sat down.
Shoto beamed uncharacteristically as we locked eyes, "Fumikage... I'm really glad you came."
I felt my face heat up - he called me Fumikage! No; I needed to play it cool.
"I was the one who asked." I joked, but I was glad I came too.
"Ah, yes, we know that!" Iida grinned, slamming his tray next to Tsuyu, who flinched, "It was right after you didn't wash your hands!"
Uraraka and Midoriya burst out laughing. Midoriya worked hard to stop himself, but Uraraka let herself go wild. Come on, Iida! I'm trying to be cool!
"You know, I forget things all the time! Ribbit!" Tsuyu added, and then joined in with an adorable giggle.
A warm feeling bubbled up inside of me. It whispered in my ear, telling me that this was a warm, friendly laughter.
"Dark Shadow!" Tsuyu gasped happily, pointing at Dark Shadow as they hissed in my ear.
Dark Shadow turned away from me and towards Tsuyu, "You saw nothing."
They then evaporated in a poof of purple smoke. Tsuyu gasped again as they did so, and then she giggled. This time, I joined in too with a quaint little laugh of my own.
"It's cool. Eating lunch with a full table." Shoto commented. He wasn't smiling anymore, but I was. My eyes took in every detail of his face. It was strange; I had no idea I'd ever end up talking to someone so relentlessly gorgeous.
"You should eat with us all the time!" Midoriya grinned, "Why didn't you before?"
"I guess I struggled with working up the courage to ask. Unnecessary, I know." I did a nose laugh. I didn't need to share that. Not cool.
"You're always welcome here!" Tsuyu beamed. I smiled back, and then popped some sushi into my mouth.
Cool.

Momoyao: So how'd it go?
Meanwhile...
Mezo: did you miss me 😔 /j
I decided to text Momo back first.
You: it went really well
Quickly, I followed my text to Momo with one to Mezo that was relevant to his text.
You: i did
You: i might eat with them again, just once moreWould that be sufficient? I could only hope. The tone indicator was the only thing keeping my worry away.
Momoyao: 😍😍
You: :)
Momoyao: Really happy for you dude!!Mezo: can't believe you just left 🥲
I briefly left Momo on read. I frowned as I saw Mezo trying to keep himself together with loose threads.
You: of course i'll come back don't worry
Momoyao: Are you going to follow up?
You: i'm going to eat with him again tomorrow of that's what you meanI sighed at my spelling mistake.
You: *if
That's better.
Momoyao: lol
Momoyao: Fingers crossed things go well!
Momoyao: Right I'm off to bed ttyl :)
You: goodnightI returned to Mezo, who was typing. I could sense that something was wrong, but I couldn't put my finger on what. As I thought I rolled over on my bed and saw Dark Shadow at its foot, sleeping. I wished that they were awake; I really needed someone to talk to.
Mezo: but will you tho??
I tutted to myself, and then I sat up. I clenched my jaw and sighed bitterly.
You: you know, you can't just cling to me forever
Mezo: I'm not planning to
Mezo: I just don't get why you've suddenly left us? I'm sorry I just need to know
You: :/
Mezo: whatever, just go and write them all poems or whatever you do
Mezo: nightI froze. I set my phone down. And then, of all things, I smiled. I wanted my confession to be poetic, so why not just write a poem to Shoto?
