Scream.
That was what instincts told him. He couldn't see anything but darkness. He blinked. A ghostly figure looked at him, muttering the same word.
Scream.
The figure was red with a blue X pattern, outlined with white. Stars were on the blue X. Two black eyes stared at him.
Confederate.
That was what his brother had called him. America never understood what he meant by the demon. Now he did. It circled him, chanting things other countries had said over the years.
"You're useless!"
"All you do is cause trouble."
"Murderer!"
"Apathetic garbage. That's what you are."
"You will never learn!"
The last one stung the most. He remembered every person who said them.
British Empire, he thought, Fascist Italy, Soviet, China...
He didn't want to remember the last one.
"WAKE UP!"
HE jolted as a voice screamed at him. He closed his eyes shut.

When America opened his eyes again, the world was white.
Am I dead?
He saw a pin-prick of a person in the distance, got up, and began to jog towards them. They might know a way out.
He slowed down after finding out who it was.
The figure heard the footsteps and turned around, revealing that they were holding a bundle of sunflowers. The flag had three horizontal stripes, going red-white-red from top to bottom, and a blue square was in the upper left corner. There were stars in the blue square.
It was his brother.
"Dixie?" America asked.
Dixie smiled. The smile alone made America want to cry. His brother was here.
"Meri," he said, using the old nickname. No one used it anymore, they'd went with Ame instead. For Dixie, the name stuck. "I'm sorry for what I did, I wanted to protect you. It was the only way."
Ame felt the tears run down his face. Dixie lowered his head.
"I almost made you blind, Meri. I almost killed you as well. Not to mention Mejico," Dixie always called Mex that, "I killed myself, so I couldn't kill you."
America stayed silent, memories flashing in his brain.
"Meri, you don't get it, the voice, you need to help."
"There is no voice. Stop being paranoid. Why would anything be wro-"
"Shut up!"
"Dixie-"
"This is why i didn't want to tell you! You wouldn't understand! You will never learn!"
Tears still poured down his face as he pieced the information together. His brother was controlled by the demon he'd seen earlier. He wasn't responsible for the incident, the demon was.
"Dixie!" He was blinded by a cloth dipped in snake venom. He screamed. His eyes burned. His brother wasn't acting normal.
Because it wasn't him.
With this realization, it finally made sense. Dixie was against it all. That was why it seemed so strange, how there was so much hate yet so much love between the two.
Dixie shifted the bouquet of sunflowers over to one arm, and hugged America with the other.
"Wake up."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
America opened his eyes to see a white room. He was in a hospital bed. Ame remembered losing consciousness in the ambulance. He looked over to see a doctor or nurse rearranging medicines and herbs. He recognized his aunt.
"India-"
"Bharat." She corrected. Ame stared in confusion. He wasn't aware of the name change.
"Sorry, Bharat. How long have I been out?" He asked.
Bharat looked at him. "You fell asleep yesterday at around 11:00 AM. It's Wednesday, 3:16 PM. I think about 28 hours and 16 minutes."
"What?!?!?!"
America shot up, then winced in pain at his sore muscles. He was going to have to heal quickly if he wanted to get out of this bed.
"He Devaahaa!" Bharat said, "Don't you know not to do that?"
"Oops." Ame responded, embarrassed. "But, why are you here?"
"She's here to help me," WHO said from the doorway.
America turned his head to look at the World Health Organization. The organization was also holding a notebook, and had a pen in her coat pocket.
WHO informed him about it, "Palau, Rwanda, Bharat, Yemen, and Antigua and Barbuda have agreed to help me. They can help take over the school days while I'm on break. It gives me more free time and less stress."
"Happy to help!" Bharat told her, then looked at America, "By the way, WHO would like to know your answer to a question."
America nodded, "I'm all ears."
WHO looked at Ame, "The nerve damage done to your leg was extensive. It has been confirmed that the chances of you feeling in that leg is little to none. If you can feel, it won't help, since whatever feeling may be left, wouldn't be enough to help you walk."
America looked down, "Oh."
"The question I am going to ask, "WHO continued, "Is that you can get an amputation. We can provide you with a prosthetic leg afterward. Are you up for it?"
America froze.
"3rd degree burns get infected easily. 4th degree burns are worse. It's easier to take care of a prosthetic leg than a severely burned one." Bharat suggested.
Ame inhaled. He wasn't sure how good or bad this decision would be.
"I'll go with the amputation."
