Staring at the wall, Minna Day felt absolutely worthless. Why would the Trojans want her on their great team? All she would do was fuck them up.
Nothing would change her mind now.
Not even the gentle hand on her shoulder that removed itself when she flinched. The voice that was telling her it was going to braid her hair for the game. The fingers combing through her locks and braiding the hair into a single long French braid down her back.
Laila sat next to Minna and urged her to talk. Blue eyes dragged away from the wall as Minna said that she couldn't do it. She couldn't play, not today.
Laila patted her head gently and called Coach. Minna listened, detached from the world, as Laila informed Rhemann that Minna wouldn't be playing.
She felt bad. But she just couldn't.
She sat on the sidelines, watching, detached, as her team—her team—fought tooth and nail, made it through the game without breaking. Won the game without violence.
She inhaled slowly and deeply—so deeply it hurt—and exhaled sharply. She looked at her coaches, conferring a couple benches away. She looked at her teammates, the kind people who'd taken her and her baggage without complaint.
She stood up and joined her team on the court for high-fives at the end of the game.
The other team scowled and grumbled, but Minna smiled sweetly and made nice.
This changed her mind.
Jeremy's arm around her shoulders as they walked to Laila's car was a comfort that she indulged in despite the consequences.
Riko was sure to have eyes on her, even here, and she was setting herself up for hurt and more hurt letting Jeremy in and letting herself care about him—he who was almost like another brother. Riko would use him against her someday.
She was not looking forward to it. Her hand drifted up to her cheekbone, feeling the three with an almost anger.
