"Help me get these cans down," Hawk called out. "Sure, let me just finish packing this box," Lucas responded. "Alright, just hurry up," said Hawk. "I just hope we can get back before dark," he grumbled to himself. It had been two years since the sky had gone black with clouds and one and a half since Hawk had found Lucas, cowering under a car, hiding from whatever had captured the rest of his family. Hawk still occasionally wondered what had become of his own family but knew that question would probably never be answered. "Hawk, what are you doing? You said you wanted my help getting the cans off that shelf, but you've just been standing there and ignoring me," Lucas grumpily said. "Sorry, just thinking about my family," Hawk said. "Oh, ok. Let's pack these cans and we can talk about it on the way back home."
They finished packing the cans then moved to the pile of bags they had already packed. "I'll take the cans now, I didn't expect this little," Hawk said glumly. They began to make their way down the street, flitting from cover to cover. At every intersection, Hawk would hold his younger companion back while he searched their upcoming route for any Sentinels or Prowlers, as he and Lucas had decided to call the most common machines that roamed the country. They continued on their way not seeing any machines, but they could hear a very distant rumble that could be thunder or it could be something far worse. "Let's try and hurry up, that sound could be a Harvester on the move and I don't want to be out in the open if it comes this way," whispered Hawk. They began to pick up the pace but dived under a nearby car when they heard the shrieking of metal on metal. Checking around them, Hawk couldn't see the Sentinel making all the noise, but they knew a Sentinel would only make loud noises if it was chasing something or someone.
"Lucas, I need you to sound a car alarm, do you remember how to do that?" Lucas nodded nervously. "Once you get the alarm going, run into the store on your right and try and get into the back, then start heading home. I'll meet you there," explained Hawk. Lucas nodded once again, "See you at home Hawk, please don't get captured." Hawk nodded, then began to run down the street slowing down when he saw the Sentinel striding over to each car in the next street and sawing straight through them with its back leg. Only three cars away from the towering tripod, Hawk saw a young woman hiding with her hands over her head. The Sentinel crushed the next two cars with its forward legs and was preparing to saw the car the woman was hiding under when a blaring siren sounded. The Sentinel's eye snapped up as it began to move with its unnaturally long gait towards the sound.
"Quick! We gotta get out of here," Hawk called to the woman as he ran towards her. He wasted no time waiting for a response, grabbing her arm and beginning to run towards the nearest shop. Just as they rushed through the door, he heard a loud explosion from what he presumed to be the car that had distracted the Sentinel. The woman turned to him with awe in her eyes saying, "Why did you risk your life for me?" Hawk responded by quickly covering her mouth to stop her questions. The Sentinel and two other machines he had never seen strode into the street. Hawk and the woman crept into the backroom. Once he had locked the door he whispered to the woman, "We have to go. We can talk when we get somewhere safer than this."
