After school the next day, I walked over to the DX to hang out with Sodapop and do my homework. When he finished, we walked back to the Curtis house together. We walked in to find Ponyboy seated alone at the dinner table doing his homework, as Darry was still at work.
"Hey Pony!" Soda called as he kicked off his shoes and threw his DX hat on a chair, "Did the mail come in yet?"
"Yeah, it's right here," Pony called back, patting the small stack of letters on the table next to him. Soda walked over and looked through it, not finding anything interesting. I walked over and was looking at Pony's homework. He had been working pretty hard on the same writing assignment for the past couple days. I watched him write a few words, then stop. He slowly set down his pencil and heaved a big sigh. "Well," he said as held his notebook in front of him, "I think it's done. Chris, you mind readin' it and tellin' me what you think?" He lifted the notebook up to me. I took the notebook, "Sure! Of course I'll read it!" Pony sat in his chair looking up at me, and Soda came up behind me, looking over my shoulder at the notebook, as I began to read,

When I stepped out into the bright sunlight
from the darkness of the movie house,
I had only two things on my mind, Paul Newman,
and a ride home.
