⎯⎯ ୨THIRD PERSON'S ୧ ⎯⎯
The insistent chirping of the alarm clock jolted Kala awake. It was barely 4 am, the ungodly hour she had set for herself to ensure a smooth and timely farewell to her family. The room was still shrouded in the darkness of pre-dawn. She groaned, swatting at the alarm with a tired hand before finally silencing the insistent noise. December 18th, 2021. Today was the day she'd see her aunt Emilia, uncle Nathan, and her three cousins off to North Carolina. A pang of sadness tugged at her heart. She had been dreading this day for weeks, knowing it meant being alone for a whole week--well, technically not as there would be people staying the night with her but the majority of the time, she'd be home alone.
Kala stretched, the stiffness of sleep slowly disappearing. A mental checklist ran through her mind. Today was also the day she'd finally visit her friends at the cemetery. It had been three years since Jonghyun and her friends' passing, and the pain, though dulled by time, still lingered. Keeping her promise to him was paramount, a sacred vow etched in her heart.
Slipping out of bed, Kala padded towards the window, the faint glow of the city lights painting the horizon. A soft sigh escaped her lips. Today was going to be a long, emotional day, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
After wearing her clothes, she made her way to the kitchen, the familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee a welcome greeting. Her aunt Emilia bustled about, packing last-minute essentials into their suitcases. Padding towards the kitchen, she poured herself a glass of water, downing it in one go. The cool liquid did little to soothe the dryness in her throat or the weariness in her bones.
"Early bird, huh?"
Kala whirled around, startled. Her aunt Emilia stood in the doorway, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
"Aunt Emilia! You scared me," Kala said, a hand flying to her chest. "How long have you been there?"
