After an eventful night, during which Evan had to throw the fox out of the bed a few times while Adam slept peacefully, the group went on with their traveling. The giant stood on the horse and held his hedgehog close to his chest, and the fox tearfully trotted beside them. While they traveled day after day, the furry animal would try to sneak into their bed to be able to latch into the warrior's body, but each time, the slave would ruthlessly keep it out of reach so he could have him to himself. The canine would then try to complain to its master.
However, it would be left disappointed as Adam couldn't understand a single thing it said.
Monsters attacked them at least once a day, but never again did they see a strong one like the sabertooth. They realized, however, that a few of the attackers also had the same morbid eyes full of violence. They noted that those monsters would always travel alone, were more aggressive, and had no fear. No amount of hurting could stop them on their momentum once they started hunting, and only a deadly blow could do the job.
Compared to a normal animal of the same bloodline, they were definitely stronger, and that meant nothing good.
Still, they successfully reached Dispel in a matter of days, having taken more dangerous shortcuts. Bastien trusted Evan and Adam to defend them, and he was right. The couple would develop their complicity and teamwork in leaps and bounds. Their understanding of each other knew no egal and only one glance could lead to a deadly combination of ice, spear, and punches.
Adam also took time to practice his newly awakened ice magic, his ability now stronger than ever. It was as if all this time, his magic canals had been obstructed by something and that, now, they had been unclogged. He was like a little kid, discovering new magic tricks. He tried to make the most of everything his teachers had taught him before abandoning him because he hadn't been able to put theory into practice at that time for lack of magic affinity, the ability to gather mana from around oneself. His mana awareness, the ability to control mana, had always been pretty good, even though it had small impact because of the small amount of mana he could gather. However, exactly for this reason, he had to learn how to minimize the mana spent on spells and control it to perfection. In the past, he could only create small snowflakes, and even though it could be seen as something trivial, it took an enormous concentration to form such a complex design.
Now, with his mana affinity as vast as the sea, he could make giant icebergs and ice spears, like the one that had pierced through the savage fox a few days ago.
Still, he was always looking for new use of his power, he felt like he could do much more.
Evan was also satisfied seeing him like this, with sparkly eyes and a determined look on his face. It was more pleasant than the nearly dead look he had at the start, like he had given up in even trying to fight his inability to use magic. The giant had seen the long lasting glances that Adam would throw at people using magic, even those that used it for menial tasks, like drawing water from a well. He could tell that the warrior was past the jealousy stage, and only felt slight remorse that he couldn't do those things.
Still, it was a pastime, as he was now able to do so many things.
He had even started to try creating small ice dragons with his magic and make it do circles in the air. It was a trick he found quite funny, even more so because the fox always tried to catch the dragon, only to fall flat on his face as he couldn't fly.
Now, as they entered the city of Dispel, it was also a good way to amaze young children while they passed by them. The younger ones would try to grab the shiny dragon with graby hands, and the older ones would jump and clap their hands with excitement.
Adam was glad that he wasn't a scary person anymore, but it didn't last long because the moment the parents saw his cold face, and the intimidating giant behind him, they took their children away. The warrior's body slumped and Evan immediately hugged him from behind, knowing that it hurt Adam to be considered as dangerous. Yes, he wanted to be seen as a strong warrior, but not to the detriment of his image. He wasn't some cold-blooded monster, but his ice cold eyes were quite the contrast with his brown skin, and his long black eyelashes along with his mane of hair, which gave him a tenebrous look.
Hearing growing whispers, Adam and Evan glanced around curiously, only to see bypassers pointing at the fox tailing their horse. A light bulb brightened in the warrior's mind and he remembered that people thought every animal was a monster that would attack them and rip apart their skin to eat their bones. While it wasn't the case for the fox, others didn't know that apart from them. As they had traveled across the land, the little animal had been quite useful in sniffing out prey for them to eat, or even warning them of predators. The journey had been made much more enjoyable and easier because of it.
Its injuries had just healed completely yesterday, and while Adam had told Evan that he would let the fox go back to nature, they hadn't had time yet to really talk about it, so it was still with them as they entered Dispel. Now, however, it could lead to trouble if someone decided to pick a fight with their group because they brought in a wild animal.
Adam turned back toward Bastien, and seeing him look over, he mouthed that they were going back to the forest for a short while. He, after all, still wanted to be paid for escorting the merchant. The dryad made an okay gesture with his thumbs and index before continuing on their way to the merchant guild. As their carriage needed to be checked and discharged, they would be there for a while so Adam and Evan would be able to meet them back there.
The couple turned their horse back toward the giant wooden door protecting the city, and the fox followed them, perplexed, as they exited the city after just entering it.
Hey dear readers, they finally reached Dispel !
What will happen to the fox !?
