Seungmin despised court life, detesting obeying his parents and the idea of marrying a girl didn't love. He had resigned himself to this fate, dreaming of a quiet countryside life where nobody knew him.
"Today, we'll meet Han family and your future wife" the queen announced and Seungmin just hummed. As the king welcomed the family, he warned Seungmin not to embarrass them further. Having rejected many proposals before, Seungmin couldn't afford to decline this match.
When the doors opened, a family of four entered. After careful scrutiny, Seungmin's gaze fixated on a tall boy with slightly long hair. His heart raced, but he attributed it to anxiety. The truth became evident when the boy noticed him, smiling, revealing his bunny teeth. Was Seungmin finding this guy attractive?
"Seungmin, are you there?" his mother's voice snapped him back. "This is Yuna, your promised wife" she added, introducing a tall, slim girl with long brown-black hair-undeniably beautiful.
Yuna responded with a smile, also showing her bunny teeth; Seungmin didn't react and simply returned the smile.During lunch, Seungmin and the mysterious boy exchanged shy glances. Yuna noticed but was relieved her brother showed interest, even if it was in someone of the same gender.
After the meal, the three gathered in the castle garden. Yuna, aware of the situation, left them alone. "What's your name?" Seungmin asked, embarrassed. The boy, smiling, replied, "I'm Hyeongjun, but you can call me Junhan. It's understandable you haven't heard of me; my family fears I'll tarnish their reputation." Despite the smile, his pain resonated. Seungmin, moved, instinctively held his hand, both blushing. They locked eyes, harboring the unspoken desire for a kiss, but courage eluded them.
The leaves of the trees in the garden fell gently with the wind, creating an atmosphere of tension and sweetness simultaneously. Seungmin tried to break the awkward silence.
"Junhan, have you ever wished for something different... like escaping and leaving the court life behind?" he asked, trying to uncover more of the hidden feelings behind those eyes. The boy sighed softly, "Yes, many times. I wished to have the courage to be myself, to fall in love, leave the castle forever, and live as a normal person."
Seungmin nodded, understanding Junhan. "I've also dreamed of a different life, away from all these formalities and expectations. I feel trapped in this world I didn't choose."
The two boys shared a silent understanding, aware of how their lives were controlled by others. But in that moment, something clicked inside Seungmin. The wind shifted Hyeongjun's hair, revealing his face that had been covered by two long strands until now. Seungmin admired Hyeongjun in all his beauty; he had fallen in love despite having just met.
"Perhaps," he said with a mischievous smile, "we should find a way to rebel, to choose our destiny instead of accepting what is imposed on us."
Junhan looked at him with hopeful eyes, and that smile on his lips made Seungmin's heart beat faster. Hyeongjun didn't deny being afraid... he was, indeed.
The castle garden became their secret refuge, a place where they could be themselves without the weight of the outside world.
The wedding was approaching, and in those days, Yuna began to feel something for Seungmin, who didn't seem interested. One day they found themselves talking.
"Listen, Seungmin, this thing with my brother has to end. We'll be getting married soon," the girl said. Seungmin looked at her without saying anything. "If you and Hyeongjun continue being lovers even after our wedding, I'll be forced to tell."
He simply nodded. He would never give up on Hyeongjun. It was time to plan their escape, and then they would have their whole lives to live together.
