It was a crisp fall Monday morning in Edgewood, Maryland. It was near Halloween, 10 days to be exact. As Raine was getting ready for school, she picked out a maroon t-shirt, a pair of ripped blue jeans, and a light green hoodie with cartoonish leaves on the front, then she went to her bathroom to curl her hair and do her makeup.

Downstairs Raine's mom, Debra, is making sandwiches for the week. "Good Morning Mom," Raine says.
"Good morning honey! Loving the outfit!" says Debra.
"Thank you, mom!" Raine said with a huge smile on her face.

"Do you want breakfast?" Debra said.
"No thank you, Mom, I have to head out anyway. I need to go to one of my classes before school to help with decorating the room," Raine said. "But thank you."
"Okay honey, have a nice day. Be careful walking to school! There are a lot of weirdos out there." Debra said as she blew a kiss to Raine. She grabs her backpack and heads out the front door.

When Raine is about halfway to school she feels her phone buzz in her pocket and she takes it out to look at it. "Why does Dorthea want me to meet her in the gym? Isn't that where the 9th graders are held in the mornings? Hmm, whatever, I can always help out Mrs. Williams with Halloween decorations tomorrow." Raine hears a leaf crunch, she stops and turns. "What was that?" She whispered. Raine brushes it off and starts walking again.
Then she feels someone grab her but before she could process what just happened, she was blindfolded and tied up. "WHAT HAPPENED, WHO ARE  YOU" Raine screamed. "You don't need to know that right now."

Back at Edgewood High School, Dorthea is waiting in the gym with the 9th graders wondering where Raine is. "She said she would be here. Where is she?" the bell rang. "Shoot I am gonna be late," Dorthea said while speed-walking out of the gym and trying to get through all the freshmen. "Maybe she got here late"

Throughout the day Dorthea got worried. Then after school, Dorthea went over to Raines' house. "Mam is Raine home?" Said Dorthea with a concerned look on her face.
"No, she hasn't come home yet, why? Do you guys need to work on homework or something?" Debra said.
"No, I didn't see her all day at school. She never misses a day. I am worried." Dorthea said while trying not to get worked up.
"That's weird, I talked to her this morning. She said she  was gonna get there early enough to help one of her teachers  set up Halloween decorations." Debra said while grabbing drinks for the both of them.
"We should try calling her phone," says Dorthea while pulling out her phone. "Good idea"

Both Debra and Dorthea start calling Raines' phone but it goes to voicemail after a couple of rings. "Why isn't she answering??" said Debra with a worried tone.
The realization hits. "She is missing. We need to go down to the police and file a missing person report," says Dorthea.
"But Dorthea, that is a big accusation" Debra says.
"Well, we might as well. We don't know where she is, this is the best option," said Dorthea.
"Okay, I will grab my coat and purse. Give me 5 minutes," says Debra while speed-walking up the stairs.

While Dorthea is waiting for Debra she tries to call Raines' phone again. But this time, someone picks up. The person on the other line said, "If you call this phone again I will break this phone along with your friend's skull" Then the person on the line hung up right as you could start to hear a muffled scream in the background. Dorthea was frozen in place. Like someone had bolted her to the chair.

"Dorthea you okay?" Debra said as she stood at the top of the stairs.
"I tried to call Raines' phone again and some man answered it," Dorthea said while her eyes watered.
"What did he say?"
"He said that if I called her phone again he would," Dorthea said while trying not to cry.
"That he would smash her phone and then smash Raines' skull," Dorthea said while breaking down in tears. Debra runs down the steps over to Dorthea.
"Oh baby, it's okay. She will be fine, we will go to the police department and file a report. But we will need to tell them about that phone call" said Debra as she held Dorthea while holding back tears of her own.
They get their stuff and go down to the police department. "Excuse me, sir," said Debra when they walked in. "I would like to file a missing persons report."
"Okay mam come follow me," said the officer.  Debra and Dorthea follow the officer into a room.
"Hello ladies, may I ask for your names? Can you also give me any information about the person's physical features and the name of the person who you are reporting missing?" Said the officer as he clicked his pen.
"I am Dorthea Carr." Said Dorthea while she crossed her legs and put a serious look on her face
"And I am Debra Kriener," said Debra. "The person who is missing is my daughter Raine Kriener, she is about 5 '5, has long wavy brown hair that goes almost to her waist, has green eyes, and has dark blue glasses." Debra said while wiping away tears.
"Thank you mam, can you tell me about what she was wearing?" The officer asks.
"Yeah, she was wearing a light green hoodie, with leaves on the front. Have you ever seen a show called heartstopper?" asked Debra
"Yes, I have. It's an adorable show." said the officer
"I know right! The leaves on the hoodie were like the leaves in heartstopper. She was also wearing light blue ripped jeans with her converse, they have the rainbow on the shoelaces and it's made out of beads. And I believe she was wearing a maroon t-shirt under her hoodie, but I'm not sure. I only saw the bottom of it." Debra said.
"Okay, thank you. If you have any pictures that will help you can bring them in  over the next couple days. We will send out an amber alert and have the news cover it as soon as possible. Is there anything else that you think could help?" The officer asked while flipping to a new page on his clipboard.
"Yes there is one more thing, we tried calling my daughters phone and I think whoever took her picked up the phone and threatened to kill her if we called her phone again." Debra said holding back tears.
"Ok, thank you. We will get this taken care of. We will find your daughter ma'am." Said the officer while standing up and giving Debra and Dorothea a hug and leading them out to the door.
A few weeks pass and there are no leads on where Raine could be and no leads on who took her. The police were giving up hope, but then they got a call from a janitor taking out the trash on a Wednesday afternoon.
"Hello this is 911, what's your emergency?" The 911 operator said.
"Yeah hello, I uh just found a body behind the school I work at. It looks like a young girl. Can you send someone over to check it out?" Said the janitor that found the body.
"I'm sorry sir but did you just say you found a body?" The 911 operator said in a concerned tone.
"Yeah, behind a dumpster at Edgewood High School." Said the janitor.
"We will send dispatch right away sir." The 911 operator said and hung up the phone.
Police arrive and find the body the janitor told the operator about, they take the body so they can confirm who it is. A couple days later the results come back and prove that the body that was found behind the dumpster, was the body of one Raine Kriener. The news broke all over America. Raines' family was devastated. But no one knows who killed Raine. It remains a mystery.
