Dean watched as Shane's body that had been levitating crashed to the ground. He was dumbfounded. Never in all of his years of hunting had Dean seen anything like that. The light had vanished just as quickly as it had appeared, leaving a very unsettling feeling in the room behind it. Dean ran over to Shane's collapsed figure and stood a few inches away from it, unsure of what had just happened.

Sam got up and walked beside his brother. "What the hell was that?"

"I don't know," Dean turned to his brother worriedly, "you ok, Sam?"

"I'm fine. Beaten to hell just like you, but I'll be ok."

They stood there in silence watching Shane's body for a few minutes. Nothing was happening. She wasn't moving. But more importantly...

She wasn't breathing.

Dean tried to remain calm as his ultimate fear about Shane's possession seemingly became realized. He would've done anything to keep this kid alive and now... he'd failed. He couldn't believe it. No. He wouldn't believe it.

"Dean...," Sam said softly, putting his hand on his brother's shoulder, "I think we need-"

"No." Dean snapped coldly, "no. She's not dead. She can't be dead. I..." Dean stared at Shane's lifeless body. "She can't be dead."

Dean knelt down beside Shane and looked at her. Four years. It'd been four years since he'd seen her. And here she was, potentially dead, possessed, and beaten almost beyond recognition. Not that Dean would recognize her that well after how much she'd grown.

Dean wondered if the demon was still inside her, if it was just toying with them to see what they'd do. But ultimately, he could tell...

Shane... Shane was-

A fierce hacking and gasping for air snapped Dean out of his thoughts. He looked on the floor and saw Shane... breathing. Or, at least, trying to breathe.

Dean scurried to help Shane sit up, putting her in a position to facilitate the flow of oxygen. She was still gasping, her face nearly blue, but she was there. She was alive.

Shane was alive.

Dean waited until Shane started breathing regularly, all of her visible, unbruised or uncut skin returning to a normal color. She slowly regained a normal breathing pattern, immediately followed by a muffled yelp of pain as she grasped her thigh, right over the stab wound. Tears welled up in her eyes from pain. She didn't look up until the tears subsided, not allowing herself to cry, but when she did look up, the tears came into her eyes all over again.

"Dean," her raspy but still soft voice called hopefully, "Sam?" She kept looking between the brothers rapidly, visibly shocked. "I thought for sure she'd... I'd... That you guys were-"

"Gone?" Sam smiled, finishing her panicked sentence calmly and gently. "We're right here."

Dean couldn't speak. He didn't have the words. Shane looked at him and locked eyes with him. She looked so different. So grown up. Her gentle blue-green eyes had turned a piercing shade over the years, and her face had matured, she looked similar, but not the same.

"Hi, Dean," she nearly cried.

Dean nodded and pulled her into a hug. "Hey...," Dean paused, finally accepting that the demon had left, "Shane."

Dean could feel her crying into his shoulder. She wasn't making a sound, but her shaking told Dean exactly what was going on. He held her tighter, refusing to let go.

"Hey," Dean cooed, "you're ok. You're alright. We're right here. It's ok. You're ok. You're safe now."

Shane's breathing regulated again and her shaking subsided, but she didn't let go of Dean. "I'm so sorry."

"It's ok, Shane," Sam cooed as he knelt beside his brother, putting a hand on the girl's shoulder, "Shane, it wasn't you. We know that."

Shane released her grip on Dean and sat back. Her eyes were filled with a deep, cavernous sadness. Dean knew she wouldn't talk about it now. He couldn't imagine what she'd seen. What she'd done...

"Can you walk?" Dean asked quietly.

"I don't know. Probably." Dean helped Shane to her feet. She tried to take a step and quickly stumbled. Dean caught her, and he slung her arm around his waist, since she was still too short to reach his shoulders. Sam moved to support her other side, helping her hobble with them back to the elevator, out of the building, and back to the impala. Dean opened the door and helped Shane slide in. He could tell she was in immense pain, but she kept her mouth shut. Sam and Dean climbed into their seats, and Dean started the engine. Dean pulled the car out of its slot and started for the motel.

Shane was staring out the window at the building they'd just left as they drove away. She couldn't believe she was...alive. Somehow, she was alive. She was free. And she was with Sam and Dean again.

But....How?
