Chapter 48: Forget Me, Forget Me Not

Monday. Every school kid's favorite day of the week. Kagome was enthusiastic to go to school today as she was currently sprawled across her bed, staring at her ceiling with a conflicted expression.

Kagome's pov

Inuyasha still hasn't come by...I thought with a frown as my heart began throbbing in a familiar pain. Is he still gone or...is he by her side again?

I sluggishly got up from my bed, grabbing my backpack as I made my way out the door. I don't feel like going back just yet.

"Kagome! Kagome!"

As soon as I got to the school entrance, I looked up to see my friends run over to me with panicked expressions.

"Huh? Hey, you guys, what's up?" I asked with a raised brow as they crowded me.

Yuka placed her hands against my shoulders as Eri grabbed my arms, not giving me an option to deny whatever it was they were freaking out over. "There's an emergency!"

"Come quickly!" Ayumi said as she followed along while the other two dragged me away.

I looked back and forth between them even more confused as my heart raced anxiously. "Hey, wait a second!" What's with them all of a sudden?

The three of them ended up dragging me to our classroom as they peeked in from the doorframe like they were spying on someone. I frowned impatiently as I crossed my arms. "Are you three gonna tell me what's going on or what?"

Yuka motioned me over as she pointed at something specific inside the room. "Look there, sitting next to your seat." She whispered.

I raised a brow but did as she asked. Standing beside them, I took a curious peak into the classroom and my eyes widened in shock at the person there. "Huh?" Isn't that-

As if reading my mind, Ayumi clarified for me. "Yeah, it's Kagami. She was discharged from the hospital."

Hospital? The statement threw me off at first until I registered it was probably the excuse her brother used for her absence. But how is she here? Kagami shouldn't have been able to go through the well.

I sent my friends an awkward smile. "So uh, she came back. That's good, so what's the emergency?"

The three girls shared a conflicted expression before sending sad looks my way. "She doesn't remember us at all," Yuka said. And my heart suddenly dropped.

"What?"

"We tried talking to her again like we used to but she couldn't recall who any of us were," Ayumi explained as she looked to the floor with a disheartened expression.

"That...that can't be right. It's been a while since Kagami came back here so maybe she just forgot temporarily." I said in denial. If this was the same Kagami that traveled with me, then there was no possible way.

"Well, you try talking to her. You two were the closest." Eri suggested.

"Yeah, sure." I went inside the classroom, with them following behind me, as I nervously walked to Kagami's desk. We've been together all this time so she surely hasn't forgotten me right?

I took a deep breath as I put up a friendly facade. "Hey Kagami. I heard you were discharged yesterday." I said, standing in front of her with a small smile. "How are you feeling?"

To my surprise, my best friend looked up at me with furrowed brows as if she didn't recognize me. My heart dropped. "Um, I'm okay. Uh..."

No. "It's me, Kagome Higurashi," I said, placing a hand on my chest as I tried my best to stay optimistic. "I showed you around the school with my friends, don't you remember? At all?" Please.
