That morning, she woke up in time to get ready for work.
She went to the bathroom to put some makeup. When she looked into the mirror, she saw her straight, black morning hair completely messed up. The dark circles under her hazel eyes had became darker and wrinkly.
She decided that the dark circles was the last thing she needed to worry about. She brushed her tangled hair with difficulty and continued her every day makeup routine. She put extra concealer this time.
She put on her uniform and left the house.
Jacob used to drive me everywhere.
When she had reached Starbucks Coffee, she put on a green apron with a white logo on it. Korra and Amelia quickly noticed her abnormal skinny body and her dull expression. Her usual smile was gone.
Korra was actually about to tell her off for not picking up her phone yesterday. But the thought vanished after looking at Lauren. She didn't look like the Lauren they knew anymore. Her best friends became confused.
" So.....how was your wedding yesterday?" Amelia asked.
Lauren clenched her jaw. She shut her eyes tightly, trying to control her tears.
Korra pinched Amelia. Amelia showed a what-did-I-do expression.
At that moment, a customer came in so Amelia took this chance to escape from Korra's painful pinch.
After Amelia came back, Lauren barely managed to say with a low voice,
"You didn't know......about Jacob?? Didn't Mr Greg told you? The actual reason why I was absent?"
Korra's face suddenly changed.
"He didn't tell us. Don't tell me Jacob---"
"Yes....he did."
Korra's left eyebrow twitched and a grim expression followed. Amelia was speechless. She felt sad for Lauren.
Korra and Amelia stepped closer to Lauren. They each put one of their hands on both of Lauren's shoulders.
"We're here for you."
Multiple drops of tears flowed out of Lauren's eyes. She couldn't believe such a short, simple sentence would move her this much, especially with her current state of mind. She was grateful that they didn't say anything cliché to her. She felt like the luckiest person in the world, having such good friends.
Lauren pulled them into a group hug.
For the first time in forever, a small smile showed on Lauren's lips.
