Prologue • Brooklyn

______________

As I pulled into my lane way, I saw my neighbour across the street and best friend, Josie, standing on her front stoop. I quickly parked my car and climbed out. "Any news?" I yelled across the street. She smiled and bounced down her steps, "Check your mail," she said in a tone that was obvious she did have news. I quickly ran to my mailbox at the end of my drive way and opened it to peer inside. Mail for mom, mail for mom, mail for mom, oh, one for dad, mail for mom, and then I saw my name. I felt my hands begin to tremble as I scanned my eyes across the envelope, looking for the return address. As I found it, I nearly screamed. "What? WHAT?" Josie was running across the street. "Which school?" She shouted, trying to peer over my shoulder. I was much taller than her so she had no such luck. I reached up and covered my mouth. I walked back up my lane way with Josie at my heels. I sat down in the rocker on the cobble stone in front of my house and gingerly turned the envelope over after setting down the other mail. Josie sat down in front of me as I tried my hardest not to tear it too much. "Come on, Brooklyn! Where is it from?" I finally got the letter out and Josie snatched up the envelope. "Bristol!" She breathed,"Brooklyn! This is so exciting." I ignored her as I began to read. Blah blah blah, we are sorry to inform you, that we were unable to place you in the courses you chose. My heart stopped when I read those words. Josie must have seen it in my face, "Brook?" She said, "What's wrong?" I was scared to read the rest, but I knew I had to. 'Fortunately, we will be able to accept you into similar courses and you will be staring this coming fall semester. We are both excited and happy to have you studying at our facilities.' I slowly reached up and covered my mouth. "Brooklyn, speak to me," Josie said, probably fearing the worst. "I-I," I stuttered. "Spit it out!" She nearly shouted. "I got in," I breathed, finally looking up from the letter and into her dark eyes, "I got accepted." I could see the shock as excitement spread across her face. She screamed and I joined in as we got to our feet and tackled each other in a hug. Happy tears were falling as we shared a little happy dance right there in my front yard. It was a good thing we lived in the country where it's not so easy to get embarrassed and we have our privacy. "I'm so happy for you!" I wiped at my eyes, "Oh, my god! This is unbelievable!" "The best thing is," Josie said, "Is that we're only going to be 3 hours away from each other once we get to England!" "Wait what?" I nearly shouted. "I got accepted into Leeds," she said quietly with a proud grin. "Oh, my god!" I screamed and hugged her again. We had both been accepted into Universities over in England and that was huge for us, considering we were just two small town Canadian girls. We were finally getting a chance at a life unlike any of our friends or family have lived.

In the oddly warm month of March we hadn't realize that summer was going to be hard, and that November became even harder.

It was hard to say good bye to our houses, our friends and our family that summer, but it was even harder to say goodbye to each other. Going from everyday spent together and always being in each others classes, it was hard to be so far apart. We had always done everything together. We grew up together and it was difficult to finally be on our own and away from each other.
