Victoria G: What was the inspiration behind your new single, "Moonraker"?
Bobby Long: It was written during the travel ban when I couldn't get home to the UK. I found myself missing the place where I was predominantly brought up. I had never connected with the place before but found myself dreaming about it and it inspired me to write this song.
VG: How long did it take to write "Moonraker"?
BL: I wrote it really fast. It all came together during the space of an hour or so. The intro and middle instrumental part I had written them for another song that I had not liked and fortunately it came together.
VG: What was the process like when making this song? Was it the lyrics or the melody first?
BL: The song started as a poem I'd written. I was deliberately sat down to start work on another poetry book. Once I'd written the words I tried singing it with the piano or guitar and it came together. I didn't get round to starting the book. It's also the first song of a collection that I'm producing and mixing myself so I recorded everything at home in my sons bed room besides the drums that came from my friend Joe Pess who recorded it at his place. It was a great learning experience and I'm really excited to keep moving forward and do more.
VG: What are three words you would use to describe this new single?
BL: Raw, thoughtful and White Horse.
VG: What is the message behind the song and what do you hope listeners take away from it?
BL: It's really a homage to an area of England that is deeply mystical and misunderstood. The area houses romantic and beautiful places like Avebury and Stonehenge and also places like Swindon and 20000 charity shops. Musically not a lot has come from there except for The Troggs and The Wurzels. It's a really great place to be a kid but the moment you turn 12 it sucks you in. I've lost a lot of friends to the place. It's deceptively quiet but there is a loud romantic fog that touches everything. I hope that comes through.
VG: What's next for you?
BL: I'm producing and recording all the time so I have a few other songs lined up to release on my label. The plan is to just keep releasing music, getting better at it and expressing myself freely away from the confines of the music industry. I just want to be honest and not let an idea of perfection to block my great asset which is the ability to be productive and creative.
