Jon adjusted his fake glasses, walking slowly across his school's hallways, nervously. His red string is attached to his index finger, like it has been for a week now.
He hadn't been exactly trying to find his soulmate. His parents were ecstatic on his fourteenth birthday- after all, that's the day the string ties on your finger. They were even more excited when they saw they could see the string aswell, meaning his soulmate had already gotten theirs- but Jon had told them he'd meet them when he'd meet them. His mom said that was very mature of him! Conner had chuckled and booed teasingly.
There was a small voice in the back of his head holding him back from following the string. One that asked, if his soulmate could see the string already, then why didn't they chase after it? Why didn't they tell him about the predicament they were both in? Were they scared?
Or did they just see him and dislike who was at the end of their string? His friends told him he'd been on edge ever since his birthday, but who wouldn't be? His string led to someone in their school; he was sure of this.
He was hyperfocused, his friends told him; they'd noticed every little tug, every turn, every time the string managed to move ever so slightly, Jon's eyes would light up.
So that's why he was aimlessly wandering the silent halls of his school, with no particular reason given. You're following the string. He said to himself when he finally noticed what he was, subconsciously, doing. No, I'm not going for a walk, he said to himself once more. If my string just so happens to follow that direction, then so be it.
The hallways weren't as silent as Jon thought. Against the silence, a faint melody began to play, the notes filling the hallways. Jon was sure- if he didn't possess super-hearing- he wouldn't be able to listen.
But he does. And so he follows the melody. He follows the string. He quickly becomes internally grateful for that aforementioned super-hearing.
The song was slow but would get fast at parts. Jon followed it intently. The notes were in perfect harmony, as if the composer was painting a picture. Jon followed the music to a door, which he quietly opened without a single thought. The notes rang through the air, now much louder. It was beautiful. Jon felt as though the song was playing only for him. After all- he was the only one who was lucky enough to listen.
Jon watched the boy play, now admiring how his slender fingers hit the notes. Now, admiring how pretty the boy looked. Now, admiring how he looked beautifully concentrated, he looked.
The song abruptly stopped.
Silence filled the room.
Jon looked at, the boy's now still fingers, and the string that connected his to his own.
"Hello," the boy firmly said.
"Hey!" Jon replied.
Jon didn't intend to find his soulmate today.
But it's unmistakable, the red string connecting them. He's sure the boy has noticed it, too.
Jon takes a step forward, "Uh, I'm Jon- Jon Kent." He stumbled over his words. "Well, my name's Jonathan, but everybody calls me Jon. Whatever, Jon Kent. You get it."
The boy smugly smiles, "Damian Wayne." He then adds, his tone rather teasing, "I do get it."
Jon's stomach fluttered. He'd heard of Damian before, of course. Damian Wayne, that scary guy everyone's terrified of. Damian Wayne, that smart-ass who managed to get a grade higher than 100% in math. Damian Wayne, that asshole who's hated by even teachers.
