It took a few hours for the first group to arrive with 2 decently sized antelopes. They got to pick who went next and almost immediately went to bed. Understandable as it would be quite the task for anyone on their first hunt to drag their kills back to camp. For those who were still here I showed a demonstration on how to skin a deer. Predictably,Ann and Dineo were nauseated by the site of organs spilling into a bucket. Most of the guys were as well. Though it was good for them to get used to this now. During the cracks, simply seeing a few organs spill was on the better side of sights you had to behold. After the skinning and removing the organs I showed them how to drain the blood from the body, which took long enough for the second team to return, also with two deer but luckily for them on the smaller side. The now returned second team and the now awakened second team joined the group as Lia and another volunteer,John, stepped up to do the skinning. Lia who was used to this by now, progressed smoothly and with almost no reaction, still striking up conversation and cracking jokes to the group as she explained it in simpler terms, which I was glad about. I never really was a good teacher so to have an extra pair of hands was refreshing. By the time Lia and John had hung up the skinned deer to drain, the 2 deer I had skinned earlier were now ready for processing. I called the group over and began showing them how to cut the deer into usable parts. Removing bones to be able to make more tools and have softer and more versatile meat. With my presentation finished I asked some of them to retrieve ice from the nearly frozen river nearby. They returned alongside this morning's third group. I demonstrated how to store the meat if you didn't have a freezer and I was met with questioning gazes. I understood why. How could an eighteen year old boy know how to do all these things,a reasonable point of view. During the time we spent in the apocalypse,me and the ruling 5 had all learned these things on our own, though,we didn't need the fetching ice part as we had a mage. With all three teams for round 2 of the hunting expedition in the woods,I asked the group to prepare dinner as I started carving planks for us to use as a table. I needed them small enough to fit on a person's lap. The rest of the ruling five had joined me. Lia and John now start to dismember their own deer as the first group of round two return from their hunt and start their own skinning process under Lia's guidance. The team now more or less had an effective synergy even without the system. I didn't send out the first team for round 3 yet as it was already starting to get dark. With the tables finished and the other two teams of round two returning and completing their skinning,I started to help out with seating arrangements and food. We wanted a circle around the fire so that no one felt excluded. Once completed we all sat down to eat and converse with each other continuing to strengthen our bonds. With the night well underway I pulled out the cooler from inside our tent and handed beers to everyone and the festivities continued. Stories told about the hunts and eventually turning to ghost stories everyone bonded with everyone which was our aim. By midnight once everyone retired to their tents and I looked around at the day's hunter's statuses. Most of them received three levels from their hunt, which shocked me. A deer kill during the cracks counted towards one level max. What was happening? Was it because we were doing this long before the cracks opened? I had no answers for myself and retreated to my tent after putting out the fire.
By the end of our hunting party, everyone had hit level 10 and the ruling five had broken through the level 20 barrier. Once we reached the farm house it was already almost dark out and dinner was ready. After eating I had informed everyone that I wanted to make this a yearly tradition for us all even after school ended,we set one week each year to go hunting and reconnect with each other, which was met with only positive feedback. My grandfather was also on board. "I'll have to get more rifles and more tents if your group is gonna expand more...little fucker, making me waste my drinking money." He said as he chuckled and punched my shoulder.
This will work,I thought to myself. If this pace continues everyone will reach at least level 30 by the time the cracks open. This would give us one hell of a headstart to the apocalypse...
