TW: Abusive dad

Lyla POV:

School is my only escape. Usually, kids picture school as "Hell" or "Jail," but I picture it as my only escape in life.

Trust me, my school life is a lot better than my home life. I have people who care about me here, and it's the only place where I can be myself. Other than my best friend, Logan's house.

Logan and I have been best friends for as long as I can remember. He's always there for me when I'm down, or when my parents fight. And I'm always there for him when he needs me. We have each other. Although, we don't have any crushes on each other at all. And we've clearly stated that.

When I'm at home, my parents are very strict and even... abusive. Well, it's mostly my dad. Actually, it's always my dad who is like that. I can't wait until I'm 18 so that I can move out and live with either Logan or if I find someone I love. But in the meantime, I'm stuck with my parents. I do love my mom, but me and my dad have a different relationship. And my parents often fight as well.

Living with them is a nightmare. I have to be ready by 7 am or else I can't have any free time, I have to be back from school by 4 pm or else I'm grounded for a week, and worse of all, no screens after 10 pm or else no breakfast. At least that is the rules for the weekdays. For weekends, their pretty lenient. They let me do whatever. And you would think that that's okay... but it's not. Their fights always happen on the weekends and sometimes they would lock me in my room. I had to get up at 5 am even though the bus doesn't come until 7:15. My dad said that the time is used for "Productive stuff and nothing else."

And it's not like I have anyone else. I don't have any other siblings and my aunts and uncles live in Idaho which was the next state to us, but it was a far drive. And my dad keeps complaining about gas prices. So, we barely visited them.

________________________________________________________________________________

I woke up this morning at 5 am sharp. It was Monday morning which meant that my freedom was over.

"Lyla! It's 5 am!" My mom yelled from downstairs.

Okay, so, the rules I talked about were enforced by only my dad. I do love my mom, and she is one of the sweetest people I know.

"I'm coming, mom!" I said.

"HURRY UP!" My dad yelled.

I went quiet. I didn't want my dad to get mad at me even further.

After I got dressed and ate breakfast, my mom handed me my lunch and kissed my cheek.

"I love you honey." She said. "Have an amazing day at school."

I don't know why she tolerated my dad so much. She deserves so much more. She deserves 1 million dollars even though she might donate a lot of that money to charity. My mom wanted to start a charity to feed the homeless people near us, but my dad wouldn't allow it saying that we are close to being homeless ourselves. But my mom didn't care about if we were homeless, she would only care about my safety and the safety of those around us.

My dad on the other hand, only cares about himself. He says that we should be grateful that we live in a house since the homeless people live on the streets. Or in homeless shelters.

I put my lunch box into my backpack and kissed my mom and dad goodbye.

I met Logan at the bus stop.

"Logan!" I said as I ran over to him, giving him a very tight hug.

He hugged back with the same amount of enthusiasm.

This was our tradition, we do this after every weekend and every break.

"How was your weekend?" He asked.

"Oh, same old, same old." I said.

"Of course." He said.

"How's the project going along? I already finished my part." I said.

"Don't worry, I did it too." He said.

In one of the many classes we shared, we were assigned a project. It was us showing how planets moved around stars in two ways. And we were assigned a star system as well. I was assigned Proxima Centauri and Logan was assigned Kepler-42.

When the bus arrived, we both got in and took our spots. And like usual, we sat next to each other.

"Something really adorable happened on Saturday." Logan said.

"What?" I asked.

"Evelyn wanted to help me with my project." Logan said.

He's the middle child. He has a younger sister and a older brother. His little sister, Evelyn is 3, and his older brother, Mateo is 18. However, he isn't like other middle children, he gets along great with his parents. He is rich, but he's one of the kindest and sweetest people you'll ever meet.

After we got off the bus and headed to school, everything was going normal. And at lunch, I sat by Logan, like usual.

"Logan, I'm saying this as a best friend, but you know, you're like really handsome." I said.

"I know."

"So... why aren't you interested in girls yet? I know that a few of them have been interested in you."

"Of course they have. But I haven't found the one love of my life yet."

"I'm sure you'll find them soon."

"Same."

We both then got to talking about other stuff.

We turned in our projects after lunch since that was the period that the project was in. And the rest of the day had been quite uneventful.

I got home at 2:40 pm since I didn't have any clubs today.

"Mom! Dad! I'm home!" I said.

"Dad's at work, sweetie." Mom said as she opened the door.

Oh, I forgot to mention. My dad works as a police officer. And he's very good at his job as well. But he isn't good at treating his wife and daughter right though. He was taught that family comes second, and law comes first.

"I smell cookies!" I said.

She smiled at me.

"Well, your teacher emailed me about your star system project and she said that you and Logan did a really good job on it, so I thought you deserved some cookies. But don't tell dad." She said.

My dad is against me having desserts before dinner, but sometimes my mom allows me to have ice cream or a cookie or two before dinner. Just as long as we don't tell Dad.

"Oh, it wasn't really that hard." I said.

"But you worked hard on it. And that's what matters." Mom said with a smile.

My mom always taught me to be kind, work hard, and keep an open mind. Which I've been pretty good at all three.

I helped my mom with dinner and I did some homework before dad came home.

The rest of the evening wasn't eventful, and after dinner, I had some free time for myself and did some writing and playing video games before bed.

I looked at the time and it was 9:50. I put my phone away, brushed my teeth, and got into my pajamas to go to sleep.

I woke up in a field of flowers. The setting around me was very dreamlike and I was immediately relaxed.

"What's your name, miss?"
