"Come on, Y/n!" Scorpius whispers teasingly, pulling you along what you guess is the quidditch lawn. "And remember to keep your eyes closed!""I thought we said we wouldn't be doing anything like this again!" You whisper up at him, but let yourself be dragged along, eyes still closed.
"Well, we have to do SOMETHING to take your mind off the History of Magic finals, and we aren't hurting anybody." He says. You sigh, but a slight smile touches your lips. It had taken a lot of convincing to get you to come out of the castle with him in the middle of the night, but you had eventually relented. You always relent when it comes to him.
"Alright, Scorpius," you say with a sigh of acceptance, "what exactly do you have planned?" You peek through your eyelids and see that he's grinning back at you, his normally pale face flushed with excitement. Your heart turns over, and you tell it to shut up, screwing your eyes shut again.
"Funny you should ask," he says, coming to a stop. "We just arrived!" he lets go of your hand, and turns you by the shoulders so that you're facing something. "Now open your eyes," he says, his breath tickling your ear. You do what he says. You're standing in front of the broom shed near the quidditch lawn. You gasp, and turn to Scorpius, a wide grin spreading across your face.
"You don't mean—" you start, but Scorpius cuts you off with a hand, opening the door with a mock bow.
"The brooms, my lady," he says with a cheeky grin. You almost squeal with delight, and rush into the shed, grabbing your old Nimbus 2001 that was your mum's when she was at school.
"No, no," Scorpius says, coming in and grabbing your broom with a theatre-kid level of flamboyance, "tonight you will be riding only the best." With a flourish, he holds out his own broom, a Hyperion MKII. You gasp, remembering what Scorpius told you about it in a letter. It's one of the best models out, and his dad got it for him for his 12th birthday because it matched his middle name. You have ALWAYS wanted to try it out, but never had the nerve to tell him.
"Scorpius, I... I don't know what to say..." you look up into his face, and see that, despite the theatrics and the overdone courtly manner, he is still the boy you know; sweet, a bit awkward, and desperately anxious to make you happy in this moment. You smile, and slowly hug the broom tight to your chest, never taking your eyes off his comforting, wonderfully familiar eyes.
"Thank you, Scorpius. Really." His face flushes in relief, and his smile widens.
"Great!" He says, grabbing a practice broom, "let's take them out for a flight then, shall we?"
"Yes," you breathe, gripping the broom even tighter, your breath coming quickly and unevenly. "Let's."
Scorpius leads you out of the broom shed, and you mount your brooms and kick off into the night, a full moon casting a dim light on the world at your feet. You zip around the grounds, watching as Hagrid's hut, the forbidden forest, and the quidditch field slide away beneath you. You experiment with the broom's handling and speed; you're not the best flyer in the world, but this makes you look like a pro! You're totally relaxed and happy in no time.
After about a half hour, Scorpius flies up next to you and shouts, "Y/n! Let's put down in the quidditch stands!" you nod, and you both fly down to the stands. When you dismount, you both take seats in the stands and look off onto the field.
"I've always wanted to join a quidditch team, ever since I was a little boy." Scorpius says after a minute of silence. You look over at him, and he continues. "My mother is all for it, but my father... My grandfather made him the Slytherin seeker in his second year, and I think that kind of... kind of ruined school sports for him. I wouldn't want to be a seeker though, I've always wanted to be a chaser."
"Is there anything stopping you?" you ask, genuinely curious. "I mean, you're great at flying, especially with your Hyperion, and all. And your parents won't object to something like this if it truly makes you happy."
"I— well, I AM only 12, Y/n," Scorpius says with a slight blush.
"Oh," you say. You can feel a blush covering your face, as well. Duh, you think. Obviously he can't join our house team yet. Get a brain, Y/n. "B-but you're a shoe-in the next time they have try-outs!" Scorpius laughs with a touch of embarrassment, and looks over at you.
"Thanks, Y/n. Y-you're pretty cool too." Your body gives an involuntary happy-wiggle as a spark seems to run through your body. You give a small laugh, and give Scorpius a light sock on the arm.
"Thanks, Malfoy." He looks shocked for a second; you've never called him by his last name before, even though everyone else does. "I-I'm sorry," you say, the good feelings leaving your body as you look away quickly. "I didn't mean to—"
"N-no," he says quickly, taking your hand. "I was just surprised, that's all. I don't really like my last name but... but when you say it..." you look back at him, eyes wide. "When you say it," he continues, blushing a bit, "it makes... it makes me proud to be a Malfoy." The butterflies return to your stomach, and you look down at your hand, which is still clutched in Scorpius'. He seems to realise this, and drops your hand.
"C-cool," you say. Stupid, stupid, STUPID! You think, mentally slapping yourself. Cool?!? What kind of idiot are you?!? Scorpius lets out a small chuckle.
"Come on," he says, getting up and grabbing his broom before looking back at you with a hint of a smile.
"Bec."
A small, almost shy smile dances across your lips, and you stand next to him. Scorpius Malfoy. Your best friend. Your— ...your friend.
You're both about to start off for the castle, when you put your hand on Scorpius' arm.
"Hey, Scorpius?"
"Hm?"
"Thanks. For everything."
"Don't mention it. I'd do anything for... for this friendship. Let's get some sleep."
"Let's."
