Talia Josie Smith was her full name but she goes by Josie Heart as Talia was what her father, Mitch James Smith, used to call her as well as Smith being her fathers name and she hated that name ever since, She was named after her Mother Natalia Jayne Heart.
Josie was a criminal for the first 18 years of her life doing petty crimes such as stealing bread to eat or 'borrowing' money from strangers, her worst crime was when she turned 17 it was self defence against her father who tried to kill her but she killed him and was wrongfully imprisoned for 6 months until the truth came out. Her mother committed suicide when Josie was five and her father blamed her for it.
When Josie turned 18 she got a tattoo of a lotus on her right collarbone to represent a new beginning she also had her record expunged so she could join the police academy, because of her smarts she joined the BAU at age 25 with a specialty of weapons and kidnapping analysis, she wouldn't have made it if not for her connection to Erin Strauss who was the lady that expunged her record.
Josie has another tattoo that was branded on the left side of her waist that she keeps hidden, It was given to her by a serial killer that tried to kill her when she was 20, she escaped him but he is still out there somewhere and is part of the reason she wanted to join the FBI.
Josie always wore the same two bracelets on her left wrist in honour of her Mother and Fathers deaths.
