Autumn was the only season Thomas felt comforted by the weather. Leaves sticking onto the bottom of his leather boots, the smell of the pumpkin spice coffees in the cafe he works at and the misty morning on his walks through the orange trees in the morning. Autumn felt safe.
Unlike summer, where everyone expects you to show up and off, to dance in clubs and drink until you can't think anymore, to be around people all the time otherwise you haven't lived- it was all too exhausting.
Thomas wanted peace and quiet. He wanted to be left alone.
It wasn't that Thomas was anti-social. In fact, he was quite the charming guy. At the cafe he talks with his clients and coworkers and once in a while he goes into the bar to catch up with some old high school friends. Or, well, mates?
Now the friend part was hard for Thomas. There were some he could consider friends, but even then Thomas always was scared to completely be himself. He always hid some parts. He also felt like he couldn't really relate to them.
He pretended to be interested in the sports they were in, to like the movies they liked, to like the girls they wanted- but it all didn't feel real for Thomas.
It upsets Thomas a lot. He wanted so badly to find real connections, but he just couldn't. He always ends up wondering if perhaps he is the problem. Had he not impressed them enough? Didn't he do enough to be liked? Wasn't he likable? Did they all play pretend? Is it all a facade?
The morning arrived, the moon slowly made room for the sun to arrive and the mist clouded the streets. Thomas had had a rough night. Not because he did rough things might I add, but because his mind just kept rolling and rolling into a well.
He quickly stood up, grabbed a coffee, put on some jeans and a sweater and made himself ready with a scarf, jeans jacket and boots to go outside. He needed fresh air and there was no better time than to get it than in the morning woods.
Thomas walked through the trees, birds chirping around him and the cold autumn air hitting his nose. He felt at peace, although was quite sad from the thoughts of the night as well.
As he walked through the woods, he suddenly heard a noise, something falling.
