Gauntlet day is finally here, we lost a couple of squad mates to practice gauntlet runs but it didn't really effect me. The only thing I've been focusing on is beating Liam up the gauntlet and getting that patch, we've been neck and neck each practice but I know I'm gonna pull ahead today.
"Ready to lose Kane" Liam says as we get in line
"In you dreams Mairi" I shoot back
"You're absolutely in my dreams Kane" he says back without missing a beat
"Oh ya? What am I doing?" I move closer and smile seductively at him but instead of getting flustered he shoots back
"Me." That makes butterflies erupt in my stomach as my jaw practically hangs open, thankfully the professor chooses that very instant to get started saving me the embarrassment of being completely unable to form a response.
"It's a tie!?" I question Xaden
"Yep you both made it up in 3.31 minutes exactly." He reassures
"So what do we both get the patch or something?" Liam asks laughing
"I guess, this has never really happened before." Xaden adds
"We just love making your job more difficult really." I say but Xaden just rolls his eyes
"Just go get ready for presentation Garrick's waiting. Don't do anything stupid." Xaden says to us
"No fun" "buzzkill" me and Liam say at the same time
"Go" he says using his wing leader voice
"Sir yes sir!" I salut and walk off
There's only 6 left in our squad by presentation Me and Liam, Talon, Tessa, Gretchen, and unfortunately Ryker. We line up to do the walk Ryker in front followed by me, Liam, Talon, Tessa, than finally Gretchen. We learned about all the dragons willing to bond this year in professor Kaori's class and I already know what dragon I'm going to approach at threshing I can feel it. The only blue willing to bond this year. The dragon is as big as Sygael and has never had a rider before, I just know in my gut that's my dragon. Unfortunately since that's the only blue dragon this year and she's a rare swordtail I know lots of people are going to try to beat me to it.
"Alright listen up, it's just a straight walk down to the meadow, make sure you stay at least 7 feet apart single file of course." Garrick say and we nod our heads
"Try to keep a good pace, the longer you're in there the more likely things could go wrong, and try to talk to each other, it helps the dragon get a sense of who you are." He adds
"Good luck" he finishes he winks at me and Liam as we walk past and I turn around to give Liam one last look which he returns with a smile and thumbs up.
"Ryker sped up a bit I want to get out of here!" Tessa whines, me and Liam had been engrossed in our own conversation but her loud whine brought our attention to her she's practically shaking she's so scared.
"But I can't see their tails, I wanna know which one to approach at threshing" he snaps back. I haven't seen the my blue dragon yet but we still have about half of the way to go.
"Pretty sure this little nature walk is for them to decide" I say annoyed by his ego but also intrigued because I see a flash of blue out of the corner of my eye.
"Fuck that I bet I'll have dragons fighting over me not the other way around" he quips back I turn back so Liam can see me roll my eyes and he fake gags, but just to be a little more dramatic I put my hand over my heart and fake like I'm choking
"I can't breath...there's no room with Rykers ego. Seriously though you need to speed it up." I hear Liam chuckle behind me and see the blue make its way closer
"Why you in such a rush? Worried these dragons are gonna torch you dead like old traitor mom and da-" Ryker starts but before he can finish a blast of heat hits my face and all that's left of Ryker is charred ash
"I'm sorry what was that" I mock, I look up to see the dragon that torched Ryker and my eyes find the golden ones of the blue dragon. It moves it's head so it's snout is almost touching my head and smiles? At least it looked like a smile, I stand my ground to show her I'm not afraid and worthy and she narrows her eyes before lifting her head and making her way back to a red dragon whose looking at Liam with intensity. Ya she is totally my dragon.
"Chlo you good?" Liam asks cautiously
"Oh ya I'm great, you?" I ask
"I'm fine now that I know you are" he says
"Aww worried about me?" I say smiling turning around to look at him
"I'm always worried about you, you get yourself in to a lot and I mean a lot of trouble." He says laughing as if remembering a story or two
"I so do not you are a liar Liam Mairi" I say offended
"Really? You got us banned from one of the bakery's in town because you punched the owners son." He deadpans
"Ok that was for a good reason, he was teasing a stray dog with food and when I went over there to stop him he just made passes at me the whole time so that one doesn't count." I say
"Ok what about when you were in the hospital because you split your head open...running in to a door...while doing a magic trick."
"I was drunk ok" I say defensively
"Still proves my point though" he smiles
"You're no saint either mr I have to lay low for a couple day because I slept with a girl and now her boyfriend and his friends are coming to beat me up." I say laughing
"First of all she made the first move, second of all she told me she was single, and third of all I have irresistible charm, can't blame her." He says with mock arrogance
"Riiiight" I laugh back, although I can't deny that charm hasn't worked on me...
