This must be Hell, Emma thought as her blue running shoes slapped the pavement. She gasped for another breath. The streets were silent. That's because every sane person is inside sitting in front of a fan, she thought as she pushed her wild red hair back. What, she asked herself, what am I even doing? I hate running, but here I am, running on the possibility hottest day of the year. She knew why though. It was either this or being trapped inside with her brothers and that, for sure, was Hell.
She approached the gravel driveway and just For a moment, slowed to a stop. She looked thoughtfully down the street and then back at the drive. Soon, she promised. The gravel crunched under her feet as she continued home.
Emma opened her front door and was greeted by the worst noise in the world.
"Hey Ugly!" Her brother sneered. He had just turned 19 but you couldn't tell by the way he acted. "Wow you smell, Stupid." Sam had the vocabulary of a ten year old and was about as mature as one. His green eyes had a dangerous glint in them. He was up to something. Emma pushed her way past him.
"Where's Max?" She asked, ignoring the rude comments. She heard Sam snigger and looked up just in time to be tackled by a sweaty 8 year old. With a loud thud, the brother and sister hit the floor. "Oww!" Emma complained, rubbing the back of her head.
"What was that? Their dad called from his office. He worked at home and hated it when they distributed him.
"Nothing," Sam called before Emma could say anything "Emma just tripped, that's all." He glared at her, daring her to contradict him. When she said nothing he walked away, triumph. Max got off of her and followed his older brother. With his blonde hair and big brown eyes Max looked like a little angel. And nothing like her. she was a short red head with skin that only burned. He had a tan all year long and was the tallest kid in his grade. Where did that kid come from, Emma wondered, wishing he would go back to wherever that was.
