Chapter 37

Recap:

Justin went off to find Kenny and then finally we got in the car and started driving to the go-karting place; our first day together in weeks. Finally some normalcy.

**

We arrived at the go-karting place, and I was thinking this was about to get pretty competitive. When it comes to things like card and board games, I don’t get too competitive, but when it comes to physical competition… watch out.

I put my pink helmet on and got into my little kart, ready to kick some ass. Justin winked at me, put his black helmet on, and then got into his own kart, hands on the steering wheel.

We stared each other down until it was time to go and I got a tiny bit of a head start. I zoomed ahead of Justin and didn’t look back as I went pedal to the metal, full speed. I was going so fast on the little kart I thought it might break, but thankfully it kept a steady speed the whole way through.

I did a good three laps before Justin started catching up to me. He got up close behind me and I sped up a tiny bit more, making me just a little bit nervous, but I was too adrenaline-filled to care. Justin caught up to my speed and got right beside me, and I considered bumping his kart lightly, just to give him the message that I wasn’t playing.

I decided against it, not wanting anyone to get hurt. I gave him a little wink and sped ahead of him, leaving him behind me. I crossed the finish line and I raised my arms above my head, happy that there was finally something I could beat Justin at. He drove up behind me a couple of seconds after, looking quite defeated.

“That was not a fair race; obviously your kart has more speed than mine!”

He said, scowling a little bit.

“Justin, don’t be a sore loser. I won fair and square and you know it. But if you really feel like it was the kart and not my master skills, we could trade karts and go again?”

“Yes, I think that’s a good idea. This time I won’t go so easy on you.”

I smirked and climbed into Justin’s kart while he climbed into mine. I was even more ready this time. I forgot what a master I was at go-karting.

This time when it was time to go, Justin was sure to take off at full speed the second he could, all the playfulness gone in his face. I raced beside him, and this time the race looked a little bit more even. I tried as hard as I could to get ahead of Justin, and finally I got an inch ahead of him. He scowled again and tightened his grip on the wheel, looking extremely determined. I laughed, feeling victorious, and gained another inch on him.

There was only one more lap left and I was a good foot ahead of him, and I knew he would be pissed if I won this one too. I finally crossed the finish line and the race was even closer than last time, Justin coming in just a split second behind me. He took off his helmet and sighed dramatically.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were so good at go-karting? I would have suggested something else for us to do today.”

“If I told you then I wouldn’t have the pleasure of seeing the shock in your face when I beat you! Now do you want to go again or do something else?”

“Want to go one more time? If you win again, though, we are doing something else. I am not going to face the humiliation a fourth time. I have a reputation to uphold!”

“Okay let’s go! I can assure you that you will never beat me though.”

I was right, I beat him for the third time and this time he just looked frustrated that I had found something that he couldn’t win at. He gave his helmet back to the people working there and they laughed at his expression, me laughing along with them. I gave mine back too and followed Justin and Kenny back to the car. Kenny also looked pretty amused and he turned around to give me the thumbs up when Justin wasn’t looking. I winked back.
