What the heck is this?

Ciel walked to the pizza parlor giggling excitedly at the prospect of dinner with Sebastian. It's his birthday and well, he doesn't have anyone to celebrate it with, as usual. Except Sebastian... who is... well, Sebastian is his roommate. And best friend. If he could say that. He hadn't had a good friend before Sebastian.

For years he loathed his birthday. A lot of bad things have happened in his past birthdays... but this one, though simple, is a night he won't forget. A friend is sharing a pizza with him. How cute is that? He thought.

His giddiness brought him faster to the establishment, and perhaps the chill did too.

At last, the pizza box was on his hand. There was a note--no, two--nestled in the string tied around and over the pizza box.

His phone rang. A text from Sebastian.

Wait for me at the pizza place. I went out to buy something, I'll come fetch you on the way home.

So Ciel waits. And it did not help to keep the curiosity that was eating him up at bay. He sits, and picks up the notes and starts reading them.

...

Dearest Ciel,

First and foremost, happy birthday! Thank you for being born to this world. I know, one way or another, life has been tough for you, but thank you for going on, thank you that you kept on living, so that we get to meet. Thank you for being a good friend. I am so happy, that you became part of my life, and for that, we celebrate your existence. Had you not been born, or ceased to exist, I wouldn't have a buddy with whom I could share good memories, and the rent in our apartment. Kidding aside, words are not enough to say how happy I am to have you in my life.

Again, happy birthday! Here's to many more birthdays to come!

Sincerely yours,

Sebastian

Well there's another piece of paper that will go straight to his tin box. The one where he kept the mementos, the little gifts and trinkets he received, the things he cherished the most. Which reminds him, he'll need to find a new storage box, as the tin was starting to fill up.

He looks outside, still no Sebastian... and he was starting to get hungry now. The pizza was still warm, but if this wait goes on, it'll go cold. But no matter, they can heat it up at home. He is just too excited, maybe. He smiled again, anticipating a night of laughter with Sebastian, mouths full with pizza. What would they be laughing about, he doesnt know. But he's happy, that's one reason to laugh.

...

Ciel,

Happy birthday! I do not hope to ruin the night for you, but my gut feeling tells me that I should do this on your birthday. I didn't know how, and I still don't know if this was the right thing to do, but I have to tell you somehow.

I have feelings for you. Living with you was the best decision of my life. You make me happy, and I'm relieved to see that you seem okay with me. All my life I was just a peripheral part of other people's lives. But you, you ask me questions nobody's asked me before, like you were interested in the things I love. You share your thoughts, and ask for my advise, and talk to me about the shallowest and the deepest of things. I've never felt this seen, and important.

Everyday I look forward to seeing you at home. I couldn't take you out of my mind while I'm at school, and at work. When you're at your stressful times, I can't help but think of ways to help you be at ease.

This might have turned into a ramble instead of a confession. You don't need to give me a response. You can ignore this. You can throw this away. You can forget this letter existed. I just wanted to let you know how I feel.

I love you, Ciel Phantomhive. Please, let's stay friends even if you can't love me back.

S.

...

That S. is obviously Sebastian, Ciel thought. But with a dumbfounded face, he uttered "What the heck is this?"
