As I looked up at the grey building in front of me I put my headphones deep in my jean's pocket feeling the hole in it and praying for my headphones not to fall. I pushed the double door open, earning a loud creaky sound. I rolled my eyes almost unconsciously. The door closed behind me and I was greeted by a young woman in her early thirties chewing furiously on a gum behind her desk. She briefly glanced up at me before going back on her computer. I arched my right eyebrow at her, knowing that she couldn't see me.
I took, well tried to take a confident step toward her dusty desk and rested both my hands on it taping nervously." The pregnant teenager's group is on floor three. " She told me not even looking up.
" I-um-I'm not I'm not pregnant "
" Drinker ? "
" No I-"
" Sex ? "
" No ! I- listen to me um my brother told me there was a group for people with problems less specific, I mean uh yeah is that still a thing ? "
She finally looked up through her thick with mascara lashes.
" Well your brother was right there's still this group for the ones who basically can't afford a therapist."
I cringed at the thought of Ian but stayed marble, waiting for her to resume.
" Last floor"
I forced a small smile nodding even if she couldn't see it and taped lightly on the desk while turning around to head to the elevator.
I pushed the seventh button and waited patiently observing every little details around me. The doors soon opened and I was immediately greeted by a large room with wooden floor, a high ceiling mostly made of windows and two wooden staircases at the back.
A circle made with chairs at the center, how cliché, was surrounded by four columns and tables with food and drinks on them.
Three persons were already seated, five others were chatting standing up.God what the heck am I doing here. Oh yeah right, Ian.
I tugged on my jacket feeling chills run down my spine. The elevator must have been called down because I heard the sound of the metal door closing and a guy probably in his mid twenties looked up at me stopping his talk with the old woman. He smiled at me and patted the woman on the shoulder telling her something, she glanced at me as a wide smile appeared on her old traits. I smiled at her and gazed down again.
" Ok guys we're going to start, gather at the center please, yeah you to Sarah, I'm coming. "
Ok so she was a Sarah.
The man walked toward me.
" Hello, my name is Jai, new member ?"
" Ye-um I don't know I-"
" It's okay just come to the circle with us "
" Erm I don't know I might just wanna watch from far away this isn't really my thing "
" Okay no problem can you tell me your name ? "
" Lili "
" Well come on Lili I'm gonna find you a spot alright ? "
I nodded while he guided me his right hand slightly laid on my middle back.
People didn't really take much interest in my presence which I was grateful for, only Sarah was smiling at me. I directed once again my gaze on the floor as we climbed the stairs which lead to a kinda interior balcony. I took a chair mumbling a quick thank you and watched over the rail as Jai took a seat in the circle. As they talked more and more I felt sick, those people were probably struggling ten times more with their life than me, I didn't have my place here.
Sarah waved at me from times to times, that was actually cute so I waved back it was as if it was making her day.
My attention directed itself at the tables, my stomach grumbling with desire of food, it was pretty empty since noon, yesterday. So basically after an hour I learned there was a Jeff, Annie, George, Wali, Rebecca, Amel and last but not least well Sarah.
I wondered how Jai could do such a thing, do you even know anything about life in your twenties ? But this guy seemed to be a good advice giver." Well that was great guys, but now let's yeah that pie Annie made us ! "
I broke out of my space out phase and walked down stairs to leave, I had waited the end not to be rude and leave early but this definitely wasn't something for me, I mean socializing.
I slowly and carefully made my way against the wall but I failed and got noticed.
" Want some pie Lili ? this is delicious !"
I made a no sign with my hand even though I was starving, I would just have to wait tonigh.
I sighed heavily when I walked out of this building thinking What an actual wast of time.
