"Carter, get up!" My dad shook me awake.
"What time is it?"
"It's only six."
"ONLY?"
"You and Alison are on kitchen duty this morning. Once breakfast is over you can organize the food into the closets and if there's extras, send them to the storage room."I sat up in bed, slamming my head into the bottom of Alison's bunk. Then, I proceeded to roll out of bed, tightly make it up, and started picking out my clothes. I decided on pair of jean shorts with an All Time Low shirt and a red flannel, leaving it unbuttoned.
Then, I slipped on my white on white converse and ran a brush through my ratnest of a head of hair. There wasn't much I could do with my hair, so I pulled it into a tight bun sitting on the very top of my head.
When I approached the kitchen and cafeteria, Alison, Kyle, Calum, and Mali-Koa were already there.
"Somebody decided to wake up?" Alison grinned.
"Don't worry about it Carter, I just got here." Mali-Koa beamed.I stepped in the door and began to help Alison cook the bacon and pancakes. Then, when she didn't need my help anymore, I walked out into the cafeteria, and set a few boxes on top of a table. I called in Calum and Kyle, and they helped me carry them into the pantry-closets. I quickly began taking things off of shelves, getting into my 'mode' as my father had always called it.
I organized the foods by type and color, I started with the spices, by putting them on the smallest shelf I could find since they were the least amount of stuff. Then, I placed them neatly, starting with the A's and working my way through the rest of the alphabet.
When I moved on to the canned food, I decided on organizing them by food type. The meat made the top shelf, followed my the vegetables, then the fruits, and the etc rack was filled with all kinds of strange looking things, including pickled eggs. After I was done organizing everything, I set all of the boxes that didn't fit outside of the closet to be taken to storage, and I looked at my work with a proud face.
"You done yet Carter?" Alison asked.
"Yep! And I feel so much better now."
"Good. Let's go eat."We sat down at the same table we used last night, and our food was already there, props to Calum for that, who was already eating.
"You guys, this is good!" I said, taking a huge bite of my pancakes and bacon.
"Thanks!" Mali-Koa and Alison agreed with a smile.
"So does anyone know what we're doing today?"
"Training. Lots of it." Kyle said.
"Yeah, we have to start going on runs soon because more families are gonna be here and we need more food and supplies." Calum added.
"I heard dad saying that we have gun safety today."
"I have safety drills inside the vault today." Mali-Koa said.-----
"Okay, the first thing is to always have your safety switch on when you aren't shooting the gun." The instructor said. Today's instructor was David, Calum's dad.
"And, never point the gun towards yourself or anyone else." He added.
I zoned out a little, knowing I should be listening, but I've done this before. Although his next few words took me by surprise.
"Don't forget, if an enemy is approaching you, or another member of our camp, don't be afraid to shoot. They won't be afraid to shoot either, and we need to be prepared to experience raids, and we can't ever let intruders into our home."
We all nodded our okay's and Mr. Hood handed out a bunch of different guns. They weren't like the pistols I had shot before, they were heavy, long, and looked much more dangerous.
"Now, sooner or later you will get to choose your occupation, whether or not that is raiding, you'll still need to have an education on these things."
I was seriously considering raiding, but what if it was not in any way what I thought it would be? What if I had to kill people?
When he handed me my gun, it fit perfectly with me. It wasn't too big, and it had a nice scope that looked a little like a sniper's gun. No, I didn't know much about guns other than what Call Of Duty has taught me, but I think I get by alright.
We set up at the target range, that was directly outside of the vault, but it was still a safe distance away from the vault. I was third to shoot, and no one was really outstanding, but we all at least knew what was going on. All of the adults were out here, including my mother, father, Calum's mom, Mali-Koa, and a blonde haired woman who I assumed was Sam's wife. Sam must have had something to do in the vault. Appearantly, everyone living in the vault that was of ten years or older, had gun training twice weekly, and if we weren't doing anything, they suggested for us to go to the workout room and either run, or do strength training. Mr. Hood is basically in charge of the raids and staying fit, which they have suggested we do multiple times in the last hour.
"Now, don't forget raiding isn't the most important job. While it is very necessary for our survival, there are other jobs that need to be filled."
"Like security!" My dad suggested. We all laughed a little, knowing my dad would need to have something to do with his old job.
After we all shot our guns a few times, we unloaded them, picked up the targets, and all of the other things we got out, and we carried them back into the vault, locking the door behind us. Everyone took a vote, and we decided to just have granola bars for lunch since we had a filling breakfast, and everyone was still not hungry.
While everyone was still standing in the vault entrance room that stemmed from the cave, the heavy door started to slide open, and a large truck came through the entrance and stopped in front of us.
A man hopped out of the drivers side, and my dad went to greet him. Then, a girl probably around Alison's age hopped out of the passenger side with a Falling in Reverse shirt on.
"Hey! I'm Alyssa."
"Carter." I shook her hand.
